If Velasquez is showing signs of stardom as the article suggests jvett, why on the planet would the Phillies want to trade him? This supports what you have been stating all along. The Phillies apparently don't trust their farm system to supply the pieces we need and with an almost knee-jerk reaction, when they do get a good young talent, the first thought is to trade him. Just boggles the mind.

I'll bet the story was just hype to help a guy get more points in the readership stakes. I bet the "talks" were just random running with the mouth over Buds.

It's kind of like, enough is enough. A pitching staff is tough to develop. It appears that Velasquez can be a real star. With more hitting from four positions, this team can get good quick. Then we'd all attend more Phillies games. :heh:
Which four positions? Are you joking or being serious? Vince Velasquez, as dominant as he can be, is likely a ceiling 4-4.5 win/162 player with his injuries. Do you really think four of the top prospects from the Rangers or some other team could not do better?

If we don't trust our current farm system (which I'm not even saying, but for the sake of argument say we don't), then what would our next course of action be? Put on your GM hat, Retro

He's at 3.32. What, 162? What injuries. He did have TJ I believe. Four positions - LF, RF, ss, 2b, but Cesar has woke up recently. Rangers will not give up a bunch of top prospects for Velasquez. We'll get maybe one good guy ans 1 or two unknown Dominicans or Panamanians. But we can get them from the two Phillies DSL teams.

They may not, and then we shouldn't trade him. But pitching is at a premium. When the premiere names to be traded at the draft are James Shields and Andrew Cashner, you know that teams are desperate.

Yes it's bullshit to laugh at someone asking about which injuries a pitcher has had- and then in the next breath mention Tommy freaking John surgery

"Below are two graphs that attempt to convey the results of looking at recovery in this manner. The vertical axis in each graph signifies the percentage of major league pitchers who have returned from Tommy John surgery, while the horizontal axis shows the number of post-surgery game appearances in the first graph and the number of post-surgery innings pitched in the second graph. The set of pitchers has been broken down by era in which the Tommy John surgery took place: 1974-1999, 2000-2009 or 2010-2012."

I've always pictured Vinny as a closer-type pitcher.
He has the potential to be effective as a starter, but not necessarily efficient.
His pitch counts tend to be on the high side.

Anytime you can trade a reliever for quality prospects, I think you have to pull the trigger.
Really depends on what they would be getting back.

Wiki: While eighty percent of players return to pitching at the same level as before the surgery, for those Major League pitchers who receive the surgery twice, thirty five percent do not return to pitch in the majors at all. The graphs don't differentiate the numbers of TJ surgeries performed on a player.
