Well, you can count me in as one of those who watched the soccer game, but only checked in on the NBA finals games for their last 2 minutes of each game. But I suggest that it isn't growing popularity of soccer in the US as far as a spectator sport, but the decline of interest in the NBA combined with the fact that this is the World Cup. As we all know, the Olympics garner great interest during the Olympic years, but it fades dramatically for most sports (swimming, track and field, etc.) after the Olympics are over. I suspect that the same will hold true for soccer after the World Cup. Nonetheless, I'm watching soccer right now, including much of the Brazil-Mexico game, so we'll see.

I don't think it's any secret that the NBA is losing popularity each year.

Less than 5,000 people in Grant Park for the World Cup viewing party.

2.5 Million showed up for the Blackhawks parade lol

Thanks to Stern, the NBA has become pro-wrestling with a basketball.

Not shocked in the least the NBA numbers are abysmal these days. You reap what you sow.

Let's stop trying to make it seem like there's some type of soccer insanity going around.

Less than 5,000 people showed up to Grant park with a metro population of 10 million. That's laughable.

People like soccer, and it's growing in popularity. Get over it. A mid day game on a Monday is not the same as a parade after winning the championship.

Obviously people like soccer, but face it, it's never going to pass the other sports here in America. Hell, it won't even pass NASCAR

I don't get why people insist on posting on soccer threads if they have nothing good to say. You look childish when you come in a soccer thread and doesn't say anything that is worth a damn.

If you hate soccer shut the fuck up and avoid all soccer threads. I'm not a fan of hockey or golf and you don't see me in any threads regarding those sports

Every World Cup we hear this argument.

And at the end of every World Cup the vast majority of sports fans stop caring about soccer until the next World Cup.

This is not to belittle soccer but to simply point out the fact that the vast majority of US sports fans are bandwagonners. They jump all in on the World Cup bandwagon and could not even name soccer players from their hometown MLS team.

A fair comparison could be made to golf. Look how bad the US Open ratings were with no Tiger Woods this past weekend. Why? Because the vast majority of Tiger fans are not golf fans. They are Tiger fans. No Tiger? Not gonna watch then.

Same goes for the World Cup. They are all in on the World Cup bandwagon but let's see how many of them stick around to see a game between the Houston Dynamo and Chicago Fire.
