How did Kessler's positioning on the court tip Donovan Mitchell off?

Don't a lot of other players communicate, either verbally or non verbally, on defense? Around the league, on most teams.

Yes, they do… and Kessler is doing it too obviously… but Will Hardy says he doesn’t really his focus on that because he’s just trying to teach him how to do first and then disguise later.

So other players in the league are better at disguising their defense, or disguising the communication between teammates?

Our system is our system so maybe theirs nuance to how one communicates and when they need to. Players are also different in their development. Kessler is the center, like the QB of the defense. He may have more responsibility for communication. Right now it is emphasized what to do, not how to hide it.

I think the PG is the QB on defense.

He's the first line of defense, so everything starts with him.

That's why perimeter defense is the most important. The longer the perimeter can keep the ball out of the paint, the more time the taller players have to help or support. Thus a less mobile or skilled tall player can suffice.

It doesn’t matter what you or I think, Will Hardy’s comment indicates that he in his position needs to communicate to others what to do. From his position on the court, etc., he’s been given that responsibility. They are all not all communicating to each other on every play. Mitchell was able to figure out from Kessler specifically. They have a defensive play, but the flow is communicated.
