ok so i do not know what our roster will look like and i was wondering what the cap would be like if we signed a 4 or 5 mil a year goalie and gave coburn a raise to about 2.8 mil. also, re signing carcillo, powe, and another cheap forward while getting rid of cote. also, signing a good free agent defenseman for about 2 mil.

it puts us over the cap. we either have to get rid of a forward or not upgrade on defense to make it work. i think if the flyers signed a goalie at 4-5 mil then hartnell is likely gone.

or we go with the same defense which might work because our goaltending would be upgraded. also, i doubt any team this year will be as good as the hawks were.

briere, richards, gagne, carter, hartnell, giroux, leino, betts, van reimsdyk, laperierre, timmonen, pronger, carle, and boucher are 47.5 mil.

those are the players we have signed. the cap is 59.4 mil. so we have room to work with.

i will add carcillo and powe for what they are making now and put a cheap 600k forward for the 13th forward. then add bartulis as the 6th defenseman. re sign coburn for 2.8 mil and sign a defenseman for 800k for depth. then sign a 1 mil a year 5th defenseman. then sign a goalie for 4.5 mil.

this leaves us 800k in cap space so i guess it can be done. i would not call a 1 mil a year defenseman a big upgrade though.

There's no point to carrying a 13th forward and a 7th defenseman all year. It's not like they can suit up for an injury in the middle of a game, so you would only need them for the next game. The Phantoms are only a state away, 300 miles max, so you're talking an hour flight to get someone into town in time for a game. I could understand carrying an extra for the long road trips where it's not reasonable to fly a player cross country in under a day, but not the whole season. It's just a waste of valuable cap space, IMO.

the point is, there are injuries throughout the year. you need cap space to fill those spots. you can not just say, ok lets have 12 forwards and 6 defensemen and no cap space. then, you better hope that when a player is injured it is long enough to go on the long term injured list or you can not fill their spots on the roster.

you have to have the cap space. i am not saying they will carry them all year although the point is clear, they need space for injuries.

this leaves the team a little less than 2 mil in cap space to call people up in case of injuries which is basically equal to calling up 2 players from the phantoms at the same time which will eventually happen most likely.

I am pretty sure you need 23 players for purpose of the cap. Thats why you see 14 forwars, 7 dmen and 2 goalies.
