Starting Rookie QB's

Each of the QB's selected in the 2024 draft are entering different and unique situations. Most of them will arguably play at some point in the upcoming season but how many will be the game one starter for their team? Multiple choices welcome.

Outside of the obvious 3: Williams, Daniels & Maye... I think McCarthy & Nix are good choices to start day 1. Or at least it is their job to lose, right?

Nix vs. Zach Wilson... I could see this going to Wilson. Mainly because I never thought Nix was as pro-ready as he was being sold to be. But I'm no scout. His film is solid.

McCarthy vs. Sam Darnold (or Nick Mullens?)... Sort of a crapshoot here. This should be McCarthy's job.

As for Penix & Rattler... No chance outside of injuries. Falcons already took a massive black eye for even drafting Penix. It would be a fireable offense to bench Cousins after paying him to start.

I went Williams, Daniels, Maye, and Nix.

Penix isn’t gonna start week 1, barring injury it’s unlikely he’ll start at all this year.

Vikings may want to keep JJ on the bench for a bit and see if Darnold can have them competitive.

Rattler will probably never start in the NFL. He’s a horrible QB.

I only have Williams and Daniels as for-sure day one starters, with Maye, McCarthy, and Nix all distinct possibilities. Nix might actually have the best shot at starting on day one amongst those latter three. Maye has to beat out Brissett and McCarthy has to beat out Darnold, both seasoned vets and starters. Nix might have an easier path going up against Stidham and Wilson.

This looks right although I think Nix can beat out Stidham. Honestly, I think Wilson will be flipping burgers shortly and Stidham is in that Minshew range where I think he is feisty as a bridge QB but you might as well just throw your first rounder in there right away.

Maye is considered high upside but the least ready (if you're to believe the Kurt Warner and Chris Simms of the world). Brissett is a solid pro. Patriots aren't really a contender this year. No reason for the Patriots to rush.

Daniels has to beat out Mariota. Considering there strengths and weaknesses, might as well just start Daniels day 1. I'd say the same with JJ McCarthy and Sam Darnold tbh but JJ is so young that realistically he could sit a whole year and I dont think you could take that as a negative.

Never said Darnold was good, just that he's experienced and he might get the nod for a few games or until he craps the bed to start the season.

Stidham is in that Minshew range

Minshew has a QB rating over 90 and completes more than 62% of his passes

Stidham has a sub 80 QB rating and completes less than 60%.

Minshew isn’t particularly good, but he’s vastly superior to Jarrett Stidham.

Thats fair. Stidham's YPA is a little better but turns the ball over more and doesn't have a large sample size. Its probably fair to say that Nix should be the presumptive starter.

I picked Williams and Nix. I am currently the only voter, (of 13), who didn't vote for Daniels. I expect the Commanders to be cautious and use Mariota's experience in Week 1. I expect Daniels to be the starter by Week 11 at the latest.

Six rookie QB's in round 1. Teams will be under pressure from fans to start the rooks. Looks like everyone agrees that Caleb is the day one starter, followed by good odds that Maye, Nix and Daniels could be there as well. Those will be some well watched and talked about training camps.

Bears, Skins, & Vikings start Rookies week 1.
Dont see Maye or Penix starting at all week 1.
Chance of adding Nix to the week 1 starters.

So I chose the 3.

It's tough for a rookie QB to start in Week 1. It's also tough for the team to sit a top 12 pick at QB for a whole year if you don't have 1 of the NFL's top 20 QBs playing ahead of him. Penix is the only 1st round QB not penciled in to start in Week 18.

Nix might start but I could see Stidham or Wilson starting as well.

Penix will only start if Cousins isn’t healthy.

I doubt Rattler would start even if Carr got hurt.

Well, it's pretty certain that at some point in the season, 5 of the 6 rooks will be starting, and if Cousins has any kind of a medical setback, we could see all 6. It will be great publicity for these teams who might not otherwise have gotten as much national airtime. I can see the various networks execs hyping up the games when it will be rookie against rookie. Lot of combinations there.

Watching and learning did JJ a lot of good as a freshman.

I see something similar for him as a rookie.

Would be surprised if he’s starting Week 1.

I don’t see how Penix even gets to the backup role tbh.

I just don’t see the Vikings going with Sam Darnold to start the season, so I think JJ will start.
Penix will be the backup with the Falcons, he’s better than Heinicke.
