One thing about browser hijacks like MyWebSearch et al is they write keys to the registry for all the major browsers (Chrome, Firefox, IE, Safari) so if you are using one and you notice it's infected it won't do any good to switch to a different browser because the infection is already in the registry...and loads as soon as you install and fire up a new browser. Browsers like Maxthon and Opera though will work as they are minor players and are ignored by most of the hijacks...other minor browsers are also not likely to get infected.

This brought back the memory of about 5 years ago when my sister's computer got infected multiple times with the Win32/Vundo malware. This was the computer she and her kids used at home. Popup windows for fake Viagra, dick enlargement pills, etc.. kept popping up when they would browse sites like Disney and Nickelodeon. LOL.

Was a total PITA to get it completely removed and instruct them on how to get their virus/malware scanning up to snuff.

Vundo was one of the first infections I used MBAM to finally get rid of, I was sold on MBAM from then on.

I imagine it would be a lot of people running their diagnostics and posting the logs here and KSooner telling them what to delete. I think he already has a full time job. :pound:

Yeah, doing just this kind of stuff among other things for my clients...

I don't think the Mac vs PC would be a problem here. I use both myself (better withPCs). I think what you would find is folks telling you they got this strange problem.

I like to play with all the different Linux distros in my spare time. Found a new NAS only Linux last night, got me something to play with this weekend, sure I have a spare PC sitting around doing nothing right now...

Vundo and all its variations was still a major pain to get rid of cause it inserted crap all over the place and deep into the registry. That thing just seemed to bounce all over the major ISP networks for over a year attempting to infect any system that wasn't protected.

God I hated that thing.

I have a partition for trying out Linux OS. I've gotten lack about trying them out. Need some inspiration, a high tech forum here could provide that. It would give one a place to talk about it.

The latest version of Ubuntu can be installed inside of Windows 7 or 8 and run as an application so you don't need an extra partition to try it out. Once done you uninstall it like any other application in control panel.

Ubuntu had a older version that would do that, never understood why they got away from that. Good to here it is back.

That older version was the first Linux OS I installed on a PC. Before that only live CDs.

There is a really neat Ubuntu derivative distro called Zorin, it's kind of a cross between Windows 7 and MAC OS. Can also be configured to look more like Windows XP. It's not quite complete as some features don't really work but the distro is stable because it is Ubuntu based. It doesn't like older wireless cards though and you have to manually configure them.

Got it on a live CD. Really like it. I was using it to post here on SportsHoopla when my regular OS was to infected to use.

I run Zorin on a Dell laptop that originally had Vista on it. Downloaded and installed Maxthon for the default browser though...Maxthon grows on you. It and Opera are my goto browsers anymore.

Maxthon use to make itself the default browser without permission. I didn't like that, but they fixed that problem. It's a nice browser however, so is Opera. I always have multiple browsers on my PC. Right now I mostly use Firefox, but had to add all the old features to it. They turned into Chrome for God sakes.

Have you heard of the Bodhi Linux? Supposed to minimal and enlightened...may give it a shot on an old Dell P5 that I'm currently running LXE Ubuntu on as the guy who made that distro is becoming somewhat of a prick as far as support.

Thanks, I will check it out in a bit. Hopefully similar to Zorin, which is very windows like.

Doesn't look like it. The Enlightenment interface looks totally different from anything I've seen before.

Well that can make it interesting also. Not going to try it out until the weekend , when I've got more time. How do you like it?

I down loaded it for future use.

Don't know yet, just been looking at the screen shots on the web site. Like you, I'll try it out this weekend...while also looking at that NAS Linux, it's bootable from USB and controlled using a web browser on another PC, should be fun.
