A new article on PC World addressed this issue and there are some legal concerns. Still, it could help slow down the spread of botnets.

For those of you who haven't heard the Gameover Zeus botnet was taken down. It was responsible for the Cryptolocker malware.

on a somewhat related matter, thanks to those of you who recommended malwarebytes.

This might as well have been written in Chinese. These words have no meaning to me.

Got a link to the article? That would help.

Maybe not offline, but a partitioned area of the net that still gives them access to programs that will help them clean their act up. I'd think most people get their antivirus over the net, so if you shut that down they may not know how to fix it. I guess CD's are still made and sold at stores :noidea:

No.

But they should be able to email you that your IP has been identified as showing the behavior of an infected computer and list of resources to resolve the issue.

Act like a fool then, you know MACs are not impervious to trojans and hijack software these days...

I don't have a Mac. I've never heard of that stuff before.

One question would be, what does a person do? Everybody has basic anti-virus software, right? Everybody keeps ups with updates and such?

Seems like this type of attack has increased these things to a higher level, and there seems to be an army of people world-wide now who spend all their time sneaking into other peoples computers. Hacking is big time business, and I'm not talking about military/foreign govts/spying types, but rather the stealing, extortionist types.

Seems to me there needs to be a whole new level of protection software.

Well here's a article on the botnet. Haven't found one that suggests taking infected PCs off the net.

Law enforcement agencies disrupt Gameover Zeus botnet | PCWorld

"The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) has published a website to help victims of Gameover Zeus remove the malware."

If you can remove the malware, then helping PCs owners do it is the right course. No need to take them off the net.

I think you would be amazed at how many people don't even have an antivirus enabled, let alone up to date. I'd put the number well north of 50%.

Which just shows we need a tech forum on SportsHoopla. The news about botnets has been around for a while.

Yup. Some folks are just not informed or just don't care enough. They most likely don't do regular oil changes on their vehicles.

my former wife was an IT person, and it was great having someone around to keep up to date with everything. She eventually went into data storage, because she got tired of keeping up with the constant changes.

In addition to what I did have, which was just a basic anti-virus, I got Malwarebytes installed on recommendation of others here. It's the 2.0 so hopefully it will work for awhile.

Good to hear, still keeping up on some threats on web is a good idea. KansasSooner gave some good advice a while ago on how to protect yourself from one of the latest threats that encrypted computers then demanded ransom. The protection you have won't stop this threat.
