Luis Gonzalez hacked out 50-some for the Snakes ... and got his number retired.

Richardo Hidalgo hit 44 for the Astros in '00 ... a Hall of Famer if there ever was one.

Terry Steinbach is the first player to homer in his first MLB at bat and All Star at bat.

I'm glad someone answered that Hickman question, I couldn't remember his name. Remembered he was a Cub, but drew a blank on the name.

Dave Concepcion became the Reds regular shortstop in 1970.
Who was the Reds regular shortstop before that?

There are a couple of options but this is the guy BR refers to as the regular. He's not an unknown, fwiw.

Interestingly, this guy (and a couple of others sporadically) are between Davey C and the Reds other slick-fielding Latin -- Leo Cardenas, who was way better than anybody gives him credit for being.

woody woodward.

Woody be the man.
Darrell Chaney is listed part of the time but never as the regular shortstop.
Earlier in 1970, Frank Duffy is also on the list.
He was part of the deal with Vern Geishert that brought .............. to the Reds.

Thanks for bringing up George Foster, and causing me to check and realize/remember that he was much more than just his 1976-1978 seasons. My fading memory has him fading badly and quickly when he went to the Mets, but that was not exactly the case at all.

Foster had a much longer productive career than we sometimes choose to remember.
348 career HRs isn't too shabby. I recall the Reds broadcasters saying that when he went to the Mets in 1982, that was the one blow the Reds could not take because it made their lineup too vulnerable.

'82 Reds were the worst in franchise history.

Nope. Another hint, unless people want to take a stab at it without one.
This happened in 1966 and marked the first (and maybe the only) time than anyone had ever hit more than 2 HR in a game and wasn't in the starting lineup.

I confess to having looked up those details but I did remember the player and the year.

I just remembered this Q & A from a few months back, and, I see that it was today in baseball history when this one occured.

8/12/66 - In a game which featured a total of 11 home runs, Reds' Art Shamsky, who came in as a defensive replacement, hits three round-trippers in a 14-11, 13-inning loss to the Pirates at Crosley Field. Cincinnati's new left fielder's eighth inning home run put the team ahead and his 10th and 11th inning shots, equaling the major league mark for round trippers hit in extra innings, tied the game.

Woodward reminded me of the baseball IQ of Reds players in that era.

How many Reds can you name that were later managers or GM's ( Woodward was a GM) ? There are several, and many of them were bench players.

The era, being from the middle 60s ...

If Tony Perez counts, he'd the first one I think of.
Pat Corrales?

Not too many others from the middle 60s.

Rose and Frank Robinson, of course.
Gordy Coleman? Was in the Reds front office for years.

Sideline trivia

I had to look this one up. Who wore No. 14 before Pete Rose got it?
Actually, 2 players are listed.

I haven't the foggiest on the 14.

Tommy Helms replaced Perez, and might have spelled Rose too. I count 3 backup catchers that managed. And a pinch hitter that later became a regular with another team.
