Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings here, but I just checked the lineup for today's game, and the Reds have Jack Hannahan as their D.H, and he is hitting 9th.

And, I am not sure which is worse. The fact that a guy is being used in a position to only hit, and he is put in the most light hitting spot in the lineup, or, that the Reds are using a guy to D.H that is just barely hitting his weight.

Conine is correct. Going back a year earlier, it's more interesting.

Anderson Machado

Yeah, that's the same Anderson Machado who ...

Hannahan has had some quality AB's off the bench. I'd rather see him than Lutz, TBH. Clearly, Dusty doesn't think much of the DH or is too dense to deal with it properly.

Maybe I should have done some research before I made my comment John. I say that, as Hannahan is pretty much the most qualified Red for the job. I did not realize their bench was so thin. I see another young kid named Robinson that they could slot there, as he is hitting .314 in VERY limited duty so far.

Hannahan still can't hit well enough to hold down a regular job.
Robinson is still pretty iffy, though I like his speed and defense.
Right now, the Reds have three so-so left fielders with the other so-so left fielder on the DL and the first-line so-so left fielder out until at least August.
Reds bench is like most other NL benches -- not designed for the DH.

I agree that this is the case for most NL teams. However,I am not buying that it should be. It is a change/shift in the game that is bringing this on. I say that, as in the good old days, most NL teams had one guy that was their main pinch hitter. He might only play in the field a handful of times per year, but had value, as you could count on him for a timely hit more often than not.

Now, teams don't have or go for these pinch hitter guys. Now, teams look for bench guys who can wield multiple gloves. While this does usually free up a roster spot for teams to carry an extra pitcher, they have lost the reliable hitter.

Famous play at the plate in the 1970 All-Star game when Rose barreled over Ray Fosse at the plate. So, who got the base hit that allowed Rose to score?

Let me try this, now for the 5th time. Buggy board for the last hour. I know the answer to your A.S game question, but feel I must not answer it here. It is kind of unfair, as I live in the Bay Area here in CA, and I have heard Ray Fosse talk about this many times over the years.

Good luck in getting this one right folks, as the guy who is the answer did very little else baseball wise outside of the 1970 season.

again, my dad was at that game, and gave me the full description the next morning. so, i'm going to stay out of this one. i really like this thread. as bigd says, it's fun and really is a big part of what makes this game so compelling.

I love trivia. Pretty much all trivia. And, when I find it, I stay with it. I just wish I could turn all of this otherwise useless info swimming around in my melon into a job, one that I could actually like.

But that is not how my luck and life roll...........:gaah:

Since this question is still hanging.

Jim Hickman. Played 1B for the Cubs, and hit over 30 homers in 1970. Not much after that though.

O.K. Let me try not to screw this up.

The last A.S game played in Cincinnatti was in 1988 ( they are set to host the 2015 game ). The M.V.P of that game was A's catcher Terry Steinbach. With his homer in that game, he accomplished something that had never been done before.

What was it?

Well it wasn't a walk-off. I can't recall much about Steinbach's career. Does it deal with being a catcher?

Here's Terry.

Jim Hickman was also a pretty fair hitting coach for a while...I believe a Reds minor league instructor let go by Wayne Krivsky, back in the days he was offing people to give old drinking buddies a job.

Dunno the answer on Stienbach, but he caught a couple of no hitters. Also dunno how he made 3 AS teams, cause he didn't hit that much.

Narrowing it down a bit, no, this is not a catcher thing. It's a home run thing.
