Earlier today the Reds signed Roger to a 1 year deal. It's a minor league deal with invite to big league camp. So he can make the team with a good spring. Outta all the recent signings this is my favorite one. The kid had a rough year last year, But 2 years ago he put up some pretty good numbers playing CF. I think this kid could surprise some people in Spring and make the club. A nice sneaky signing in my opinion.

Sorry but I see this as more organizational constipation. It is keeping a prospect stuck at Pensacola.

Guys who hit .181, regardless, are clogging up the pipeline for the Reds.
At least this one is from Antilles, so he speaks Dutch.

The Reds sign guys like this every year, hoping to catch lightning in a bottle. Rarely happens. But the Reds do need to have someone to play center field if Hamilton doesn't pan out.

He has an opt out WHEN he doesn't make the big club. Hey, it beats playing part time in the DR or bartending for Carnival.

Anyone else think Bernadina looks like Edgar Rentaria with a lifestyle lift ?

Bernadina probably won't want to play 3B either.

if you watch other teams throughout the year and in the off season, you will see that a majority of them make similar signings.

The OF roster already looks to be set with Bruce, Ludwick, Hamilton, Heisey, and Schumaker. I think Schumaker is going to be used primarily in the OF. Everyone one else is plan b.

The 25th spot looks to be reserved for the backup middle IF, most likely Santiago. I saw where the Dodgers signed former Reds' farmhand Justin Turner. He was traded for Ramon Hernandez in Walt's first winter as GM. I'd liked to have seen the Reds pick him back up. Descent glove with limited range and a good bat, a Schumaker type that plays all the IF positions.

I can see the associated problems with signings. You get the best guy you can get, sign the contract and ... later on, you find that somebody else was going to be available and it's too late to add another contract to the mix.

Lovin' Spoonful song applies here.

Turner's agent probably had a spiel ... Walt decided it wasn't worth the trouble ... and went with a guy with MLB experience. Bernadina isn't evil. He's probably not Willy Taveras or Corey Patterson.

Honestly, with all the scrapping this team does every year in the weakest defensive position in baseball, I'd just as soon kept Xavier Paul, who can at least hit.

LF in the Nati is a wasted spot 8 years out of every 10. Why pay $9M for that ? "Worth" is relative, but I think .280/ 25 HR/ 95 RBI might be about right for $9M. Does anyone think Ludwick's chances of that are fair ? I don't. Not close. Walt paid $59 for a Ruth Chris steak and got a White Castle burger missing the onions, there. The heartburn is free though.

It can go one of 3 ways for Luddy and the most optimistic is pretty far down the list.

Most likely is that he hits .188, finds some sort of mystery injury around the first of July and goes on the 60-day DL. So Chris Heisey is really the LF.

A second possible outcome is around .230, 18 HR, a .310 OBP and regular, if not spectacular defense.

Thank God Dusty's gone...Bernadina would be hitting second on opening day.

It's not like this guy hasn't got a track record. Anyone that has ever hit on a penny slot machine knows what happens if you keep pulling that handle too often. If this team really NEEDS this guy, it's gonna be a long depressing year.

RB is Triple-A meat and he's probably happy to be that. But he's also the first or second callup if somebody hits the DL.

Jason Bourgeois and Roger Bernadina -- actually, most teams will have players of this caliber as their 5-6 outfielders. Either one is fine for 15 days. Beyond that, the lineup unravels.

I agree. Besides he aint the only one having a good spring. Chris Heisey is knocking the cover off the ball. His new batting stance so far has worked.

Heisey is having a good spring. Ludwick looks like Jack Hannahan, but he's making $9M. That means unless he gets hurt again, Heisey is a PH or occasional breather OF. It's good he's hitting though...maybe Price won't be wiling to wait until May for Ludwick to get a hit.

As I predicted when we first signed him,I thought he would be a sneaky pickup and with a strong Spring Training Roger Bernadina has officially made the Cincinnati Reds team.

If Schumaker doesn't get hurt, Bernadina doesn't make this team. He's another version of Xavier Paul. A good spring is fine. It doesn't count but it is nice.

Ya know, Ryan ... if I bragged about every prediction I got right over the last 30 years, it would fill a novel. But what I don't like is when people point out when I get one wrong. It just smacks of arrogance.
