Nolan Ryan also had 19 ONE hitters. That's crazy... Yes, a 100 mph fastball, a breaking ball and not great control ( or time to tell which pitch is heading toward you) makes it tough to hit... A few reasons why I'm convinced Chapman is a no brainer as a SP.

I wish Cingrani well, but am equally glad he doesn't have the same expectations on him to be a stud immediately his counterpart Fernandez has. Less pressure on a rookie is usually better.

In deference to time, Chapman would get very few 1-hitters because he wouldn't get more than 110 pitches. Ryan frequently had 160-180 pitches. His best games, he'd walk 9.

True. I think he's a guy that like Ryan, has the POTENTIAL for no hit stuff every time out. Not been too many of those lately. Johnson, Verlander, Strasberg.

Frickin' Marlins sure do foul off a lot of pitches.

Yeah, they drove Cingrani's pc through the roof. I guess 5 hits, 3 walks, and 8 k's will do that. Pretty good start for Cingrani, though, especially considering it was his first major league start. Eight k's is impressive. He allowed a lot of base runners, but he managed to get out of the jams. Showed some poise. I do think he needs to master another pitch besides the fastball so he can catch hitters off guard more often. A steady diet of fastballs can only get you so far.

Also looks like a safe bet for Cingrani getting his first win of (hopefully) a long and successful career. Congrats to Tony! Shocking that the Reds have scored nine runs without the aid of a home run. I'll take it, but Votto doesn't look right...

Cingrani looked great. He had some jitters, but he did great under pressure. I wouldn't mind seeing him get another start or two. His SO/9 last season (A+/AA) was 10.9 with a majority of his total innings (146) in AA. This season in AAA it was 16.3, but a small sample size of 14.1 innings. Still had a 14.4 SO/9 this game, so not too shabby.

Pitching against the Marlins is perfect for a first start. He gets to say he beat up on a major league team while pitching against a minor league roster. A good confidence builder.

Teddy cracks me up. Loved seeing him last year. Glad they brought him back to the dugout.
