2014 ZiPS Projections ? Pittsburgh Pirates | FanGraphs Baseball
Based on these projections, a rough estimate of 80-85 wins could be made, ignoring potential contributions from Polanco and Taillon if they were to be called up, in which case, the number would jump to a higher, but more variable, 82-92 win range.
These calculations were loose, approximate, and not very accurate.
What they illustrate, however, is that the Pirates should at least be reasonably in a playoff hunt for much of next season even with their current roster, but to truly content, some things will need to go right for them. For example, I estimated wins based on Gaby Sanchez playing every day at first base. It is more likely we will see some sort of platoon involving a left-handed batter, which could add a couple wins from first base if that lefty hits well.
