Great pitching duel tonight. Kershaw went the distance, sparing the BP. Look for Ned to acquire a relief pitcher or two before the deadline. If he doesn't, he's an idiot.
After Uribe swings out in front of two straight curve balls, Vin says, "If Juan's still looking for a fastball, he's going to have to put an ad out in the paper."
Honestly, I think the it's one thing to need to be content with not having a strong #5 pitcher in the rotation, especially if three of your SPs are in the top 15 in all of baseball in ERA. But I don't think you should be content if that #5 pitcher is making $10 mil per year. And that is my problem with Haren. Fact is, he is making #2 money, and pitching like a #5. And even on the team with the highest payroll, that isn't going to cut it. That is putting ourselves in the position to give up a game every 5th day, and paying $10 mil to do it. That's not going to fly.
Really, it's the same thing for Wilson, but at least he doesn't go out and start every 5th day, like Haren.
I understand that in the playoffs, we really don't get to a 5th starter, but especially with this month after the break, I think that LA needs to get homefield throughout the playoffs, but that is going to take a strong finish (read: a stronger 1-5 SP and another arm in the bullpen). Hopefully the NL wins the ASG.
Given the fact that Beckett is not only on the DL (again), but the fact that he was not even really healthy for most of his starts, I really don't trust him to go the distance. I'm thankful for what he has don for us so far, but I'm counting on really only having a strong 1-3. I think that we are inevitably going to need another arm in the rotation, at least.
