OxnardKingsFan (Tom) passed away late Thursday night. I don't know what he shared here with you guys, but if I know him well...probably not much unless you were close to him like I know some of you are.
As some of you know, he was my grandfather and introduced me to the ESPN Kings board when I moved back out here about 11 years ago. I have met several of you through him over the years at Kings games. Puck, Loco, DavnLaguna....and I am sure there are more.
He passed away peacefully at home with friends and family around him. I saw he posted a couple of weeks ago...which is right around the time he lost all of his energy due to cancer. If you would like to more details on this subject then you can shoot me a private message and I will explain further.
He took me to my first Kings game at the forum in the mid-80's. I don't recall the year, but I do remember it was as least as far back as when Carson, Robitaille, and Duchesne burst onto the scene. He bought me my first puck at this game...it was a Quebec Nordiques puck because I liked the way it sounded.
He always took me to the doors of the Players Club after games so I could get autographs. He let me stay as long into the night as I wanted. I remember one special night when the people we sat next to were big Edmonton Oilers fans from Edmonton. They gave us their passes to the Players Club afterwards and we sat at a table with Paul Coffey and Grant Fuhr and had a meal afterwards.
Tom has brought in 4 generations of Kings fans with his passion for the Kings. On any given night at Staples Center our family would have 4 generations at the games. Tom and his wife, Rosemary. My mother...along with me and my wife and our 2 kids.
My daughter is 7 and plays hockey at the Channel Islands Ice Center. Even when he got really sick he came down to that cold building to watch his great-granddaughter play. He bought a Channel Islands Riptide jersey with plans to put her name on it so he could put it with his Kings jerseys.
I hope in the long run I am half the man and good person he was. If any of you would like to get in touch with Rosemary just shoot me a private message and I can make it happen.
