I liked what I saw at the NT position. It would be nice to have a downright dominant man-beast there though.

Putting IW on the ps will be a bad move, they have to find a way to keep him on the 53! According to miaocco there was more than a few teams scouting the game last night .

Giving Baalke credit again, eh? Don't worry, you'll get use to it.

I've seen RJF mentioned as depth at DE. So it's possible. I also read that when Soap came into the league he couldn't communicate with the coaching staff so he was unable to learn the NT position.

There was a bazillion teams that wanted Ian Williams as an UDFA. Watch his OTL clip and you will see. Probably the main reason he chose us was because he knew Franklin wasn't coming back, he said it himself on the show. Doubt he lasts on the PC.

If the team wants to keep Williams it'll have to keep him on the roster as I can't see him lasting on the PS.

I have a feeling they'll keep him on the roster but if they feel really good about RJF I could see Williams being expendable.

believe Dobbs was playing RDE in pre-season and if so, he'd back up Justin Smith.

we could keep Ian Williams if we consider Sop backing up McDonald AND........we're ok with RJF starting at NT? if not, can't see us keeping Ian Williams (on active roster) who's just a NT?

who was playing LDE when McDonald came out?

I don't see the difficulty in keeping Williams.

Keep starters: Justin Smith, Soap, McDonald
Keep backups: RJF(NT or DE), Williams (NT), Dobbs (DE)

And if you want a 7th DL man Tukuafu (DE)

Last year the 49ers had 6.

Franklin, Sopoaga, Smith, McDonald, Evans, RJF

Williams replaces Franklin, Dobbs replaces Evans

RJF to back up LDE?

ok, if he's a capable back at LDE fine, but is he?

has he been practicing enough at LDE? if he's the primary back-up at NT, how much do we want him practicing LDE?

How comfortable are you with two rookies and a third year player for depth?

How much of vet experience is needed for backup roles?

One rook is at the NT, can't be too much of a transition. The other will learn from Smith or McDonald and RJF being in his 3rd yr has improved over and over.

don't think they can keep all three of these guys on the roster? unless you're thinking Sop and RJF are also depth at DE's?

Sop will be the starter at the nose. I think RJF has been playin' all up and down the line in order to be basically the "4th starter." At this time, I would predict Ice, J. Smith, R McDonald as starters. RJF as first backup and likely 2 out of Dobbs, Williams and Tukuafe. Not sure if Willliams would clear waivers and I would rather keep him.

yeah ok, so IF Sop and RJF can in fact back-up DE's in whatever combination, fine with me.

the bottom line will be just how good they project Ian Williams, Demarcus Dobbs, or Will Tukuafu? they'll keep the one with the higher ceiling whether NT or DE.

so far i've seen Dobbs hold his ground, push his man back, and make some tackles. so if i had to guess now, we'll keep Dobbs first.

Dobbs seems to have a big ceiling if he continues his growth properly... the guy is long and if Aldon is getting pressure due to his arm's length then Dobbs should be able to do so as well. Dobbs can be a solid rotation guy, maybe not a starter but someone I would want on the team if he holds true.

Which makes Tuks expendable IMO.
