I guess its good that he is in better shape going into the season. Plus with an often injured LoMo depth at first base is a good thing for this team. Jesus Montero is a guy that doesn't have value as a baseball player unless he can hit the ball. He is limited physically on where he can play in the field to 1st base.

I expect this to be the last season for Montero in the M's org.

Refreshing to see something positive written about him for once. I still run under the assumption that whatever we get from him will be surprise as I have all but written him off. However if he can even play an adequate 1st base and hit a little he will have value on this team given the 1st base situation. Lomo is anything but a sure thing.

I will take his 2012 numbers in a heartbeat. I am not counting on the defense part. Watch him in spring training last year trying to imitate a 1B, it wasn't pretty. Maybe it was the weight.

I wouldn't be surprised if his weight had something to do with it. He may not have had much of an interest in playing first base at the time either and if he was willing to let himself go physically, it's possible that he could have checked out mentally as well.

Probably true. Looking forward to see if there is a real change.

If he stays disciplined with eating and working out, I think he'll be an asset for this team.

That would be an 'et' better than he was for us last year.

Nice to see Montero possibly getting serious about his career. Too bad he had to wait until after we had signed a $56 million DH.

He would have to have a significantly better bat than Morrison before I would trust his glove at first base. Having him at DH and Cruz in RF presents defensive problems as well. So, unless he can be a 20 homer/75 RBI guy, then I see no place for him in the lineup.

He needs to go to Tacoma, keep a very low profile, and just hit. Hit and hit and hit. Then maybe they will be able to trade him for a serviceable veteran at the trade deadline.

That might have been the last little kick in the pants that he needed to get re-focused and back into playing shape. It's his own fault that he's either going to be splitting first base duties with Morrison or getting the majority of the playing time at first base in Tacoma. I think DHing anywhere is out of the question at this point unless DJ Peterson out-plays him in the spring and takes the 1st base job in Tacoma, leaving him with no other position to play.
