I think the front office has done a good job so far but we need to move more players.

Jackson/Gregg deal to Atl would be fantastic. They need a SP since Hudson went down and are looking for bullpen help.

Schierholtz/Navarro to TB would also make sense. They have a great farm system and both of these players would not break the bank. They could use the upgrade at catcher and were looking for a LH bat.

Dejesus/Russell to Oakland. They could also look at Nate and Russell. They have a lot of OF's who are not hitting. They also were looking for some LH relief in the pen.

DeJesus, Shierholtz, Russell and Navarro are still under team control through at least next year. Why should they have traded them for anything less then a good offer? Gregg was the one that should have been moved, but apparently there was no interest him, which shouldn't surprise anyone as he has reverted back to his old self recently with a 5.79 July ERA and WHIP over 2.00.

Schierholtz and Navarro are on 1 year deals. Both at 29 are having the best years ever. Selling high on both these players would have been a great way to maximize assets. Even if we decide to resign them, we will pay the premium because they had good season.

DeJesus has a team option for $6.5 million next year. Last year statistically was one of his worst season. This year he has been hurt along with not having a great season. He will be 34 next year. I would much rather have tried to move him for something instead of releasing him at the end of the season.

LH specialist went at a premium this year. I like Russell and if we could not have gotten a good offer then you keep him. However if some team would have made a great offer for him, then I would have had no problem parting with him.

Schierholtz is only arbitration eligible not an FA. I thought Navarro was in the same situation, but when I double checked he will be an FA. Still if they weren't going to get anything there was no point in moving him, especially to the Cardinals. Schierholtz's power has increased slightly, but the biggest difference is just that he finally has a manager using him correctly. Schierholtz his .270/.334/.440 against RHP the last three years ('10-'12), but his overall line struggled a bit because he was getting 208 ABs against RHP and 60 against LHP, with a .552 OPS against them. This year he has 264 ABs against RHP with a .277/.324/.542 line against them and only 33 ABs against LHP, with a .561 OPS in those ABs.

Schierholtz will be a very good platoon player again next year just as he has been his whole career and while he will get an arbitration raise it probably won't be over $3.5M and they can trade him next year when there is actually someone ready to fill the spot. It isn't like he is blocking anyone that is ready to come up. DeJesus was a 1.3 fWAR player last year and is already at 1.6 this year despite the injury. On the open market players get about $5M per fWAR which means DeJesus is very much worth the $6.5M team option and, like Schierholtz, could be moved next year if there is a young player ready to take over an OF spot. I'm assuming there was no decent offer for Russell, because if there was I believe he would have been moved and the same goes for Gregg.

The Cubs didn't have to move any of those players. They were not blocking anyone. The moved Soriano to open a spot for Lake who was the most MLB ready prospect they had. DeJesus and Schierholtz are solid fillers as Soler, Almora, etc work their way up the organization. You are underestimating the value of Dejesus if you think he is worth buying out ($1.5M) over paying the $6.5M for next year when he has already put up a value of over $8M this year. This would be a very different conversation if there were some prospects ready to come up, but there are not.

Navarro I would have rather moved him for something rather than losing him,

I did not realize nate was Arb 3 this next year. I like him however I do not think we will get him that cheap. I would rather have moved him for another asset in the minors. In the offseason they can sign another 28-30 year old who could put up a decent slash for $2-$5 million.

I really dont think think I am under estimating Dejesus at all. His last 3 season have been the worst of his career. He is going to be 34 next year. His numbers are not going to be going up. No way a .267/.328/700 guy who if lucky will play 100 games this year is worth $8 million. I would have liked to see him moved for something.

The reason we can move Nate or David is because we can actually get something for them. Then in the offseason if we still need a filler its very easy to sign a player like that for a reasonable sum.
