The craziest on that list is on the other side of the spectrum in Blanda not taking any sacks in his era. Before my time so I have no idea why.
I thought the same thing. but I know very little of the passing game pre superbowl era.

George Blanda retired in 1975

The NFL started recording sacks in 1982

Spring/ 2022, Broncos fans ( and some others), talking about challenging the Chiefs in the division and possibly a deep play-off run.
Spring/ 2023, those same fans talking about RW being washed and trying to calculate when they can get out of the contract and start over.

Fwiw, I think RW bounces back under Payton and plays well but I also think the Broncos are at best, a marginal play-off contender and will need some breaks to get into a WC spot in a tough AFC.
7 months later and your prediction is holding up well.

It would be great to see Stidham get an ankle sprain (something minor) and then have Wilson come in and win the game.
Wilson is being scapegoated for a poorly designed offense and a poor defense.

First down: Run up the middle
Second down: Run up the middle
Third down and long: Throw to receivers who can't create space from the defender
Fourth down: Punt

Wilson loves throwing the deep ball for big plays and he was restricted by Payton. Sort of like how Michael Jordan was restricted by Dean Smith.

Fuck Sean Payton.

Interesting how the top 5 with the lowest sack % were pocket passer statue types. It's as if the more/better a QB can move, the more likely he is to be sacked. Almost seems counter-intuitive.

Maybe, just maybe, the pocket passer statue types had better pass protection.

And maybe, just maybe, the ones with higher sack %'s had inferior pass protection and had to wind up running for their lives more often.

Or maybe, just maybe, they knew their limitations and just got rid of the ball instead of trying and failing to run away from the pressure.

Maybe, just maybe, the receivers weren't as good at getting open in the compressed time given their QB.

Bottom line is that a good pocket passer is only as good as the pocket he's throwing from.

Oh, so all of the mobile high sack guys coincidentally always had bad OLs and lousy receivers, while the immobile low sack guys all had great OLs and receivers? Lol you're grasping at straws.

They have low sack %s because they developed fast releases, because they had to have fast releases because they don't have the wheels to run away from trouble.

Quick Decision making. QB IQ, intelligence to seeing what the defense is gonna do, instead of ad-libbing to extend the play, giving more opportunity for the sack.
All allows the pocket passer to get rid of the ball faster.
Dan Marino, Drew Brees, Manning. They are all not surprises at being leaders of the (not being) sack pcts.
Tom Brady. DCs were always trying to figure out how to force him to hold the ball longer.
These guys could manipulate ordeal with the defense pre snap, while the runners have to deal with the defense post snap. More opportunities for failures or mistakes.

But the athletic guys make the highlight reels & the announcers gush with praise.
but reality. They arent as efficient as the boring pocket passers.

So while I was also surprised to see that trend. When you think about it. Most Qbs that came out used to using their legs. Probably a reason for it. They arent as adept at all the pre snap vision as the statues that have to rely on pre snap vision & decision making.

I think you guys missed one variable. The pocket passers O-lines knew where their QB was most of the time and could set the pocket accordingly with good schemes whereas the guys that run around a lot would not be where the tackles and guards thought they would be and create more chaos and loose pockets.

Maybe just maybe it wasn't the OL in Seattle... RW is 3rd in the NFL in getting sacked this year... Last year, he led the league in sacks, with a different HC... New HC, same ole story...

Pure pocket passers with lower sack numbers had better pass protection based on their team's play design, offensive schemes and play calling.

Wilson has never had a top rated O-Line.

My best guess is that probably 20-25% of Russ's sacks in Seattle were because he bailed out too quickly. Likely because his vision wasn't as good due to his stature.

He does this year. His O-Line is #4 in pass blocking and #8 in run blocking. The line isn’t the reason he’s been sacked 45 times.
