Randy Gregory on top of mock drafts for 2015 class | sports.omaha.com
Nebraska junior defensive end Randy Gregory had a standout season in 2013, his first with Nebraska, and draft experts have taken note.
He started 10 of 13 games and recorded 66 tackles and 10.5 sacks while earning first team All-Big Ten honors and now he’s near the top of mock drafts for the 2015 NFL Draft.
It’s especially noteworthy since the Big Ten has not had a top 10 pick in six years. The last Husker to go in the top 10 was Ndamukong Suh, who was selected with the 2nd overall pick by Detroit in 2010.
Some of the mock drafts even have Gregory as the top pick. He’d be the 3rd Husker selected with the first overall pick.
Here’s a breakdown of where Gregory ranks:
USA Today (Full mock draft)
Pick: No. 1 to Jacksonville
What they said: “Gregory isn’t on the same level as Jadeveon Clowney, but he’s a 6-6, 245-pound defensive end with tremendous first-step quickness and length.”
SB Nation (Full mock draft)
Pick: No. 1 to Jacksonville.
What they said: “A year from now, Gregory could turn himself into the best pass rushing prospect in the draft thanks to his length and athleticism.”
CBS Sports (Full mock draft)
Pick: No. 3 to Jacksonville
What they said: “One of my favorites, Gregory is still learning and needs to get stronger, but he shows flashes of Jason Pierre Paul when he was a young rusher at South Florida.”
Lost Lettermen (Full mock draft)
Pick: No. 4 on the Draft Big Board
What they said: “Gregory was a monster in his first season in Lincoln with 10.5 sacks and 19 TFLs. All that’s left between him and NFL riches is for him to add muscle to his 6-foot-6, 245-pound frame.”
Athlon Sports (Full mock draft)
Pick: No. 8
What they said: “The Huskers’ pass-rusher has a great frame and size for the pro game. He needs to bulk up in order to stuff the run better on the next level but there is no reason to think that won’t happen in 2014. Gregory has rare combination of size, athletic ability and toughness.”
