This is a five-fold increase on his current salary. And he literally did nothing to earn it, other than be the guy who was the backup when Luck retired.

Run-of-the-mill QBs are a dime a dozen.

He's probably better than "run of the mill"

I'm not gonna argue who Brissett is.
I know they have enough confidence in him if Luck got injured long term he could continue as a successor. Now that he is that starting guy. They were confident enough to extend him. Giving them time to fully see how he is as a starter.
I am sure if they didnt feel he could be that guy, they wouldnt extend him.
As the player/agent you are not gonna allow to be extended to be a starter for run of the mill money.
The Colts got their starter for a super cheap price & not long term.
He makes almost starter money. Win/Win for both sides & both sides taking risks.

Based on what?

Not what he's put on tape yet. 206 YPG as a starter isn't particularly screaming anything other than "we can find that from DeShone Kizer".

Get ahead of the market in case he is good, I guess. That's a decent amount of guaranteed money if not, though.

I don't understand the thought process. This doesn't keep him from getting a market value deal next year if he's good this year.

Colts have no option but to stick with Brissett at least this year, most likely this and next year. This does nothing but pay him for two yeas what the tag would cost him next year,so they bought out the tag. They lose flexibility but I guess they don't expect any top QB's to be free after this year and wouldn't want to draft someone and have them start in year 1 if they don't have to.

I don't see it as crazy. Panic, yes.

The current free agent list is full of garbage, but there's guys out there who have shown themselves to be about equal to Brissett, and who probably won't be able to command $10 million in guarantees next season.

Teddy Bridgewater, Brett Hundley, Blake Bottles, and Jeff Driskel are probably all about equally talented, and might not get $20 million guaranteed on a four year deal.

Heck, they could find some placeholder QB next year in the Case Keenum/Ryan Tannehill mold for pretty cheap, too.

Perhaps they could have done that, but this way they are guaranteed to have a QB they know and knows them unless he gets hurt.

I understand the thought process (I think).

I'm just not sure I would've done it

I would understand the thought process if he had shown anything other than an ability to survive.

Outside of him not throwing interceptions, everything about his stat lines stunk. But hell, even Tyrod Taylor is good at not throwing picks.

Brissett's deal shows there's no good reason for Prescott, Goff, Elliott, or Tunsil to risk playing 16 games on their existing deals.

That's not today's Colts team though. He was rushed into the position and since they have developed the offensive line into one of the better units in the league, which has also helped the run game (even if they still lack a designated "bell-cow", unless you have faith in Mack). The defense is much improved, which should keep them from falling behind early. The pressure is squarely on Brissett now though; he doesn't have any excuse (other than his own talent level) for any failures this season.

I don’t understand the 2-year deal. 2-year extension? Ok. 3-year deal? Ok. They’re essentially giving him $27 million for the 2020 season. Makes no sense other than to keep him happy...and who knows if they should even care whether he’s happy or not.
