I'm very skeptical on how McKinnon would do in San Francisco. As for McCaffrey, I can see him improve in his sophomore season, as he's still improving. I pick McCaffrey.

this is a good comparison question...

i am taking mckinnon for 2 reasons...

1. No Cam Newton (he will always steal RB touchdowns)
2. No Backup(Breida is not much and neither is Joe Williams)

Very little love for McKinnon thus far. I read somewhere ( can’t locate it now ) that the 49ers lead the league on passes to RBs on first and second down. Supposedly the big reason they signed McKinnon. Panthers signing C.J. Anderson looks like a upgrade over Stewart. Guess most are in the “I’ll believe it when I see it “ mode when it comes to McKinnon.

Alright a case being made for McKinnon. Good points to boot.

I'd side with McKinnon.

But I loathe McCaffery, so, doesn't mean much.

Gut feeling?

I think he'll get a lot of work in a good system. CMC has a major disadvantage with how Cam theives TDs, not to mention Anderson. And Olsen back. I think it's more that I'm not a CMC guy than pro JMK.

If Christian McCaffrey was in Kyle Shanahan's system?

I take CMac, though.

CMC vs JMM.png

Personally, I'm a fan of neither.
But I'd take McCaffrey over McKinnon.

McKinnon
Was part of an 7th ranked run-offense in Minny. Goes to a 21st ranked run-offense in SF.
Played on less than half the offensive snaps (46%).
An optimist will say he did more with less.
A pessimist will say Latavius wore down the defense so McKinnon could come in fresh an excel.

McCaffrey
Was targeted a whopping 113 times. No RB was targeted more. None.
Was part of a 4th ranked run-offense in Carolina.
CJ Anderson replaces JStew, but McCaffrey's role is unchanged.
Played on nearly 70% of the Panthers offense.
Has decent redzone looks (21%).
Saw the Panthers play the Bears last year. They used this kid tons. What scares me about him is they use this kid tons. It would not shock me if this kid ends up getting concussed they used him so much and he got pounded in the open field.

that system is made to make stud RB's, and they paid alot for mckinnon
Shanahan's record as OC shows a lot of splits.
Freeman and Coleman in Atlanta.
West, Crowell and Tate in Cleveland.
Though he did lean on Alf Morris in Washington for a couple of years.

Rather have McCaffrey. Already stated I won't own McKinnon because I just don't trust him. He was a backup for a reason. If he was so freaking good, Minnesota wouldn't have signed a free agent running back and then drafted a running back and played both of them ahead of him last year. Sorry I just keep seeing Toby Gerhart when I look at him. Minnesota third down back that signed a big free agent deal to be the man in Jacksonville. Got drafted in the 4th or 5th round in all fantasy drafts that year, and he was completely terrible.
