I just purchased this one a week ago. Haven't had a chance to use it yet, but looking forward to cooking with Charcoal. In the past I've been exclusively gas only because it's easier.

that's a really nice unit.
have you done any smoking on it yet?
I know it's only been a week, probably better question is what is the first thing you are going to smoke?

Born and raised in Memphis

Bbq = charcoal with a variety of smoking wood.

Grilling = gas or charcoal

Steaks I prefer gas and now actually my new cast iron grill pan...the cut, and the rub makes the steak...adding the charcoal flavor is nice, but the convenience factor...especially on a weekday night makes it the choice.

Burgers, chicken, fish...charcoal is the way I go if I have time.

So, what's the verdict on this thing??

I love it so far, I smoked some ribs 2 weeks ago and it was epic, my son gave me a solid 9 out of 10... I think he was being nice though. I'm kinda learning on the fly as I've never had a smoker before, but having a blast. this weekend I'll be smoking some Salmon

I used the gas part yesterday for the first time and it got up to 300 in about a minute and cooked the chicken, burgers and dogs perfectly.

So far this was definitely worth the price and I'm very happy with it.

This is likely a really dumb question, but how much smoke does smoking meat generally produce? I would love to get a smoker and kick up my outdoor cooking. The problem I have is the close proximity of the neighbors.

Smoke the ones ya hate out, while the rest of your neighbors will definitely take notice.

Nah...smoker in close quarters? No problem here anywhoze.

Depends on the smoker and how much wood you use. Mine get's really smokey after stoking it, If you have a fan you can direct the smoke away from the porch...

Take fan. Direct towards shitty neighbors. I like the combined advice!

I can't imagine a "real" smoker could produce enough smoke to annoy your neighbors.

Charcoal makes it taste better but if you're strapped on time a gas grill does the job just fine.
