The mistake is now complete.

Maybe we couldn't have relied on him in the playoffs, but I don't care, because he would have helped us get there in the first place.

This looks bad, and I just hope the Pirates knew something about him that we don't. Perhaps an injury or something.

Yeah, but 16 mill?

i wouldn't say the phillies spending habits constitute a measure of market value.
they are being crushed by the bloated contracts doled out to
howard, utley, rollins, ruiz
halladay and lee were bloated by reasonable risks for aces.
hamels is probably over paid with a heavy contract as well.

their GM is horrible, amaro, so i wouldn't use him as a barometer or market value.
more like desperation value.

Fair points. Although it doesn't mean they missed here.

I also think AJ has some culpability here too, the whole Pittsburgh or retirement comments, dragging everything out till the bitter end, and going to a bad team for more money are all less than upstanding ways to operate.

has been his MO from Fla to Tor to NYY.
he is a competitor, but doesn't think very much.
you can see it in his demeanor and the way he pitches.

hasn't nearly fulfilled his potential that his raw stuff could've delivered.

even the NYY thought he wasn't worth it when they were paying him that price, needed pitching, and dumped him, and they are the high spenders.

Amaro might have got bargain at 16 million. Your forgetting Burnett determined his value by limiting his options to just three teams.

the yankees and mets are in his radius as well, but he didn't list those.
can't handle the ny media.
he is a prima donna, and he picked the wrong spot in philly for his psyche.
also probably won't mix well with lee -might butt heads - and hamels - very southern calif sensitive.
also a very poor fielding team.
wish him luck, he will need it

Am I reading that right? There's an option for a second year at $15 million? Why?

It's kind of confusing but it seems like it's a mutual option, if both options are picked up his salary is 15 million, and if the team declines and he accepts there is a 7.5 million dollar option, but I can't tell if that is an option of just a huge buyout.

that is ruben amaro trying to save his job this year and not really caring about what happens next year,
that is what he has been doing each summer since he became GM.

the Nats(who have pitching) and the O's (who need pitching) both didn't want him. the pirates recognized what he is and only wanted him back with certain conditions. the high spending yanks didn't want him.
the phials always overspend and that is why it took so long because burnett didn't want the pals, but they were the only ones who are desperate and willing to throw major money and a possible year 2 option in.
the others could have gotten him for less and no draft pick loss and still balked.
there are reasons why he is not considered an ace, or # 2, and might even be a stretch for a # 3 on a good team. he is a 500 pitcher even tho he was been on good teams all along.

So he can basically get $23.5 million for one year?

No wonder he signed with them.

it is confusing the way they worded it, but that is what it seems like.
also can be traded to 9 different teams, which the phials will be out so that is a a possibility.
interesting if buds picked him up at deadline and phils would pick up some salary.

Y! SPORTS

With his new contract, Burnett gets a $7.5 million signing bonus, of which $1 million is payable Dec. 15, $2.75 million next Jan. 15 and $3.75 million on June 30, 2015.

Burnett has a $7.5 million salary this season, and the contract includes a $15 million option for 2015 with a $1 million buyout. Burnett would receive the buyout only if either party declines and he fails to make 30 starts this year.

If the mutual option isn't exercised, Burnett would have a $7.5 million player option for 2015. The option price would increase to $8.5 million with 24 starts this year, $10 million with 27, $11.75 million with 30 and $12.75 million with 32.

He can earn an additional $1.75 million annually in performance bonuses: $500,000 each for 24 and 27 starts, and $750,000 for 30.

He'll be gone soon enough, for whatever reason they still think they are contenders with that old roster, and Amaro is the type of GM of that always thinks as a contender. He doesn't have the skills to oversee a successful rebuild.

Phils just gave him an awful deal one their end. Don't see how anyone can bash the Pirates now for not signing him, no matter what they offered, nothing would have matched that lucrative deal the Phillies just gave him.

23 M for 12 wins.
that is a tough deal to pay.

would rather save the money and give it to liriano if he shows last year was not an aberration. he is the age that is worth signing to a 3-4 yr deal and be around when we have the horses to run a full race to the finish.

NO! Liriano on a long term deal makes no sense.
