53 Man Roster Predictions

The additions of Jake Scott and Leroy Harris are going to make for some tough cuts in August... I wanted to do a revised version of my first 53 man prediction, but I'm stumped on who to leave out for now... Patrick Edwards has a better shot than Kassim Osgood, imo. Scott probably pushes LaAdrian Waddle to the practice squad, too... should be some good camp battles this year for a lot of roster spots...

As I looked over the new additions I came up with 54 guys on my "final" roster. The other guys all brought too much value, IMO, so it was Kellen Moore who got the boot. We usually carry 3 QBs, but given how little value Moore adds in favor of a Montell Owens or a Steven Miller I think we only carry two QBs this year. A bit different, to be sure, but there are other NFL teams that do it.

I think the best position battles will be-

QB: I know, I just said we won't keep 3 QBs, but if we do Thad Lewis will give Kellen Moore a good run for the spot.

RB: Not a position battle per se, but I see Steven Miller taking Stefan Logan's roster spot as a return man/ part time gadget back. I also see Montell Owens grabbing a roster spot due to his special teams prowess. That means keeping 6 RBs, although 2 of which are key special teamers.

WR: Patrick Edwards is making some noise, and I see him taking a roster spot. Problem is that we have Mike Thomas and Corey Fuller also competing for what is usually only two spots. I can't see any of those 3 getting cut, so I think we'll open with 6 WRs this year.

TE: Joesph Fauria will be a tough cut, expect him to give Scheffler and Williams a good battle in training camp.

O-line: I think Jake Scott edges out LaAdrian Waddle do to his experience and his ability to be a reserve guard and tackle, a valuable skill-set for a back-up lineman. I think Bill Nagy is still not back to 100%, and as such I see him starting the season on PUP to open up another roster spot for Rodney Austin, who I think will back up center as well as guard.

Obviously the battle between Fox and Hilliard for the starting RT is the big one on the o-line, but that's been covered and covered some more, no need to re-hash it here.

D-line: Since we've got two DEs who can play DT as well (Jason Jones and Israel Idonije) and we're likely keeping 5 DEs, I think we'll only carry 3 DTs this year. Maybe I'm wrong and we sign Corey Williams during training camp, but I think we've got all 8 D-linemen already on the roster.

I can't see Ronnell Lewis making the team with the addition of Idonije. I'm pretty sure he's still practice squad eligible, though.

LB: We've obviously got the battle for the 3rd starting spot, so there's that. But there's also a fight between Brandon Hepburn, Carmen Messina and Corey Greenwood. Basically, it comes down to who can cover the best on special teams, imo. Messina is a tackling machine with good instincts, which I love, but is the most physically limited of the 3. Hepburn has a great combo of size, speed and general athleticism. He's 6'3", ran 4.5s in the 40 and also had good vertical, shuttle, bench and broad jump numbers; if he can cover well on ST he may have the edge based on upside potential. Greenwood is a proven st cover man, and if Messina and/or Hepburn struggles on coverage in camp then he'll be on the roster.

CB: Not much to say here- lots of competition for playing time, but I think all 6 CBs make the roster without much of a doubt, imo. I can't see letting any of them go considering all the injuries we always seem to accumulate at the position.

Safety: #1 through #3 are set in my opinion, so the competition is between Chris Hope, Amari Spievey, Ricardo Silva and Tyrell Johnson for the #4 spot. I think it comes down to Silva's potential vs. Hope's experience, and I like Hope just a bit better. I think Wendling gets a spot as a special teams ace, as he's dynamite on punt coverage.

K/P: I think Havard Rugland beats out Davis Akers and the drafted Sam Martin holds off Blake Clingan.


What do you guys think about these "closer" roster spot battles that I've outlined? I'm curious to see hat everyone else thinks about the last 5 or 10 roster spots that aren't roster locks life many of the others are...

I'm actually curious about the Kicalious/Akers battle. I think Martin holds the Punters job if for nothing other then the fact the Lions drafted him in the 5th and it could be a black eye on management if he wasn't on the roster.

I just don't think Akers will fully recover from his hip injury. That is usually death for a kicker. Rugland gives us a dual threat in case anything happens to Martin too.

Actually, I think this is the year we get rid of Wendling. Silva is almost as good on ST and much much much much much much much much better on defense.

In case I was not clear. Let me add that Silva is better on defense.

We carry only 3 tackles because both Jones and Idonije can play both positions. Would not be surprised if they moved one of them inside for most of their snaps

I keep stumbling across posative tidbits about TE Matt Veldman, which leads me to believe that he's got a fair shot at making the practice squad.

Apparently he's the proverbial small-school "out of nowhere" kid who was having a great camp and looked likely to make the roster when he tore his MCL in the preseason finally. His TE coach at the time is our TE coach now.

I don't think he un-seats any of our current 1-4 TEs, but I'm betting he makes the p-squad and sticks around till next year's off-season, which features both of our top TEs becoming free agents...

I already have a few changes in mind for my 53 man roster.

I'm thinking Theo Riddick doesn't make the final cut now, but hopefully can be snuck through waivers onto the p-squad.

Mike Thomas will also likely face stiffer competition from Kris Durham than I had initially thought. Durham offers us size and a back-up outside receiver who is capable of the big play deep. Thomas offers speed and the ability to play slot WR and line up as a RB, as well as a back-up KR/PR.

I've been an open supporter of Thomas' versatility since we traded for him, but he'll need to show a better command of the offense to beat out Durham. His return experience plus his game-breaking speed are working in his favor. Behind behind both Ryan Broyles and Patrick Edwards at slot WR are working against him.

Kris Durham is a great size-speed combo at 6'6" 220 lbs and a 40 in the mid 4.4s. He also had a 36" vertical and 17 reps on the bench, so he's a well-balanced athlete. He was a 4th round pick by the Seahawks in 2011 and he played his college ball with our own Matthew Stafford, so he's got those things going in his favor. To my knowledge, and feel free to correct me here, he doesn't play special teams. If he could find a way this summer to make himself relevant on kick coverage I think he'd have the edge on Thomas.


Overall I think it's a good sign that we have two talented young guys competing for our 6th WR spot. It says a lot that our #1 through #5 are all talented enough to leave these two battling for the last spot. Whomever loses out will be snapped up by another team right away, something that usually isn't the case with our roster cuts...

I forgot to mention that Kris Durham averaged 15.6 yards per catch on 8 receptions with us last year. That's a posative statistic and hopefully indicative of future success on the deep ball...

So a handful more than 53 names, but I think this shows where the roster battles are going to be at.

Are we going to keep a 3rd QB? Who emerges with that 5th RB spot- Miller or Riddick? Maybe neither? Who wins the 3rd TE spot, or do we keep 4? Who takes the 6th WR spot? There's an opening for the 4th tackle. Will we keep 5 interior linemen? Can Ronnell Lewis beat out Willie Young? Do we keep 3 or 4 DTs? Who wins the 6th LB spot? What about the 4th safety spot?

Lots of spots up for grabs and lots of talented players getting cut... that bodes well for us I would think, get some young, hungry players in there...

Sounds like Domonique Johnson is having a very good camp so far. The fact that our 8th CB is a 6'1", 200 pounder battling for a roster spot bodes well for the depth and quality of the secondary.

Joseph Fauria should be in and Michael Williams on the PT. Williams was completely lost out there Friday night. We can use Waddle and Fox on the Goal line plays.

Dylan Gandy is definitely in. The last O-line spot to either Austin or Scott unless we carry 10 which I doubt.

Mike Thomas is out and either Terrence Austin or Chaz Schilens is in. Thomas ST play cant save him now. Too many guys that can do that. Save some money too. Maybe keep Kickalicious.

T Lewis out and C Greenwood in. Lewis is actually competing against Messina for the backup MLB.

R Lewis is out (some team will grab him as a 3-4 OLB). We will keep one of the DTs (Fluellen, Nwagbuo, Sad-Mac)

Either Spievay or Johnson is out and we keep Spurlock as a WR/KR.

I had Fauria as my 7th round pick since October and was thrilled we signed him but he has to show me more to make the 53. Scheffler is way better than Fauria. I have posted my dislike for MT but 3 catches and the reverse keep him in the 53 for one more week. I cannot see Corey G beating out TLew and I thought Messina played well enough last year to make the 53 over TLew but that did not happen. Really liked what I saw from Nwagbuo and Sad-Mac but do not see a spot for them if I keep RLew who had a good game...and if I had to make my 53 right now Spurlock did not show me enough to make it.
