Although I am thinking it will be close between Spurlock, Willis, and Durham.

The sad part is all 3 are outplaying Nate. I was thinking T Austin might make it, but he didn't really do much in the last game so the coaches my be looking to these other 3. I am thinking now that at least 2 of these 3 make it.

To go on IR, he first has to take a spot on the 53 man roster. So we have to hope whoever takes his spot clears waivers first.

No, we can put him on IR since he's under contract for several more years. I'm pretty sure the situation you're talking about only applies to guys with one year left on their deal... Maybe I'm mistaken, but that's my understanding of the rules...

:feedback:

Love it! That's a hard 53 to argue with right there.

I think Riddick and Miller are 50/50 for that 5th RB spot, depending on if Miller wins the return job. I'd expect Leroy Harris to make it over Gandy. Both play guard and center, but Harris has a lot more starting experience. Also, the possibility is there to drop Bannan or Moore in favor of M. Williams or another DB if things shake out that way.

Mostly just splitting hairs though on that stuff... this 53 should be damn close to what we see in two weeks. I think the biggest exceptions will come from guys who aren't on the team yet. Sounds like we're likely to add a WR, and our LB unit, safety depth, and CB depth could all be upgraded post cut-down day as well. Save for maybe 5 players or so most of these guys will be our 53 this year.

I also like the p-squad picks. Chris Greenwood, Fuller, Hepburn, Riddick, Sadler-McQueen, and Veldman all would have a good shot at making the roster next year, and would provide capable injury fill-ins this year if needed...

I coud see the Lions going with Bush, LeShoure, Bell, and Veldman as the H-Back instead of Owens as FB. That would still give them an extra blocking TE until Williams is ready and frees up a roster spot.

If they do that I could see an extra DE/LB stick with the team.

It seems unlikely that Miller will make it, but I'm pulling for him. He's got that burst of speed & quickness that we haven't seen from our return game forever.

I don't see anyone claiming guys like Mike Williams or Devin Taylor. Both can make their way to the practice squad.

Taylor has not been all that impressive either. Not bad, just not noticeable. It would be a little bit of a risk, but I think he would get through also.

If they release him HOPING they can get him on the practice squad then both should be fired immediately. A team like Jacksonville would grab him in a heartbeat. You have unrealistic expectations for a rookie 4th rd pick. I think he has shown real signs of promise. I cut II in a second if needed to so that Taylor makes the team.

I wouldn't want to cut II but if its a matter of protecting Taylor I'll take the risk/reward of his future possibility over a vet on a one yr deal every time. I would carry only 3 DT's and release Bannan before Taylor. Both II and JJ can play inside as well.

Lions cut Ronnell Lewis and Chris Hope.

It seems they are pairing down some of the tougher battles quickly. I am a little surprised by Hope getting cut. At least before final cut down day as I think Schwartz has questions about safety.

Still hope for Spivey to make the final roster.:laugh3:

I believe you cannot PUP Williams and Harris once they have practiced.
I believe if you want to bring Cory Greenwood to the active 53 man roster after Week 6, he must be on the original 53 man roster to start the season.

I think you guys give more credit to some of these young players than outsiders will. I don't see anyone claiming guys like Mike Williams or Devin Taylor. Both can make their way to the practice squad. No sense in putting Williams on IR and wasting a roster spot. TEs who cant run or catch are not in high demand. Taylor has not been all that impressive either. Not bad, just not noticeable. It would be a little bit of a risk, but I think he would get through also. If we went the other way and dropped Young, he would get scooped up pretty quick.

I am not so sure Taylor would clear waivers. Lions lost Lydon Murtha that way, he was never great, but he would have been a solid back up for us.

I think you need to put down the bong and back away slowly.

Williams, you may have a point with, but Taylor was a 4th round pick and has looked pretty damn good so far. He wouldn't come anywhere near clearing waivers, imo.

Greenwood has already been placed on IR, so he's done for the year...

I don't think Veldman is an H-back type. He's more of an athletic "joker" TE. It sounds like (if his knee turns out to be ok) Owens is a near roster-lock. He fills several roles and we moved quickly to sign him when he became available. His special teams coverage ability is what the coaches seem to like best...

What a brutal pick that turned out to be.

Lewis just didn't fit our scheme. He will get claimed off waivers probably before Devin Taylor does. Lewis can play OLB in the 3-4 and be the pass rusher. Still, I would keep Taylor for what we do.

Yep, so it didn't really turn out to be brutal; it was brutal from the beginning.

Unless he was "designated for return" the Lions can designate 1 player on IR for return but that designation must be made when the player is first put on IR. Do you know if Greenwood was designated? My next question is if he was not designated is he worth keeping on the Salary Cap? If no other team will pick him up, we should release him so we do not have to count his salary towards the cap. Increases our "carryover" next year.

I can't imagine that we'd designate a back-up LB/ST stud for return.

I'd have to think we'd save that for a key starter. That being said, I'm not sure, just speculating...

Tyrell Johnson is going to push Wendling or Carey off the roster if you believe the story in the News today!

It's possible Wendling goes IR but I had him bubble to make the team anyway leaning to getting cut.

He has a history of starting for the Vikings and has played well on special teams.
