As do the Ravens and Steelers. The Steelers took Matakevich, who should have been a 5th round pick.

That's the one thing that pisses me off about the draft this year. I really wanted the Eagles to get him, and it was pretty apparent that they had him targeted for a specific pick, but the Steelers snagged him first. They should have grabbed him with the 2nd to last pick (240) instead of getting the questionable McCallister.

You guys looking for starters in the 5th (or later) rounds need to get a reality check. Do 5th round picks sometimes become starters, sure, but to really bank on these late draft picks to be serious starters is foolish. At this point of the draft you're hoping for role players and depth. Also who are we to judge if these 5th round picks are reaches or not…because they weren't the top names remaining on Mel Kiper's big board? Most the names you guys are asking for, are the same names every NFL team kept on passing up. The tape shows good potential for a lot of these picks. The Eagles scouts did their due diligence and think these guys fit the culture and scheme here, and have the potential to make the transition. This is Howie's first official year running the show -- after a brilliant off-season the guy has at least earned the right to have 1 draft completely on his name. Don't know bout you guys, but I'm excited for once.

We hardly ever draft the locals, except Smallwood this year (questionable pick) and Jarrett (forgettable). We have NEVER drafted a Penn State defensive player -only a couple of offensive players, and they are also forgettable. The Steelers have drafted a lot of PSU players.

B4L: You may know that in Philly, Matakevich is revered. He was the heart and soul of Temple's defense. He belonged to stay here, but the eagles in their infinite wisdom overlooks local players a lot. Historically.

He's the true work horse. What he lacks in physical ability, he more than makes up for in effort and leadership. That's exactly the stuff that's been lacking on this team for years. Even if he's just starting as a special teams and situational player, his ethic will surely rub off on the rest of the locker room. It sucks that he's going to be playing for another team.

And, he'd be a great backup to Hicks, if gets injured again.
