I like what I've seen but I'm only about 3 seasons into the show on Netflix.

Tennant is by far my favorite, but Smith has really been fantastic. The two of them are a little similar, so seeing them on the same screen could make for a lot of great moments.

I like Who and am excited for the 3-Doctor event coming up. I wish they could have gotten CE, but he seems a bit of an odd-duck and does not like to get type-cast, so he seems to be trying to avoid the Doctor like the plague.

Anyone have any theories on the Hurt-Doctor? I read somewhere (IMDB??) a theory that Hurt is actually the true 9th Doctor (and CE was actually the 10th; Smith is the 12th, etc). BBC tried doing a reboot around '03 that did not get off the ground, and some fans think this Doc is the one that Hurt is portraying.

I've heard that one and that he is the 0 Doctor (predating all regenerations). As in the Doctor who destroyed Gallifrey, the Daleks and ended the Time War. So this special could be the biggest as far as the continued plot line spanning the entire show.

When he turned up at the end of series 7.... you just knew it would lead to something awesome.

*also, I was unaware that the first reboot was tried as early as '03. Thanks for the info.

I can see that he can be the 0th Dr OR the true 9th Dr.

The 0th Doctor has never been referred to before in the known Who-verse, but the Doctor was reportedly some sort of criminal who stole the TARDIS in order to escape Galifray. Hartnell's Doctor could be the first "Doctor", but not the first of the entity known as The Doctor. Hurt's Doctor was said to NOT be the Doctor, yet still be the same entity as Smith's 11. Hurt being the 0th can work.

The argument for Hurt being the true 9th Doctor makes sense, since they have never really explained Richard Grant's 9. If Hurt ends up being an aged 9, who was banished from the Doctors line due to his genocide of the Time Lords and the Daleks, then the initial reboot (The Scream of the Shalka - 2003) could officially be embraced by the Who-verse, with Ecclestone retaking the title of The Doctor, and assuming the roll of 9 (ignoring Grant/Hurt).

Going with these solutions pose some problems, though. Who-lore dictates that there can only be 12 Doctors, and Smith only has 1 or 2 more eps as 11 (12?). Everyone expects that there will be some reset of his reanimations, but I doubt they would be able to do that convincingly in only a couple episodes.

The 50th Anniversary of Dr. Who.

I got hooked on Dr. Who in 1983 with Tom Baker. Then I got married and worked hard and quit watching.

The amazing thing, even kids nowadays, like Dr. Who, like my 16 year old son and my 21 year old son.

My wife and I wanted to get into it, but decided to start at the very beginning. We've almost gotten to the end of season 2, which was late 1965. Still a long way to go...

I thought most of the early episodes were destroyed. Hard to watch old shows when much of the continuity is lost.

I started watching with season 3 of the reboot and went back to watch the Eccleston season on. So psyched for The Day of the Doctor.

Yup. Seasons 1 and 2 are mostly intact, but we'll get through the late-60s and 70s pretty quickly. Not much has survived.

Ok...

So who was he? Moffat said that the numbering would not change, but the "new" Doctor identified himself as "13".

Was Hurt #9?

I think I need to watch that again. Good ep, though. Even if it didn't answer any of the questions.

Also, was Tom Baker's Curator supposed to be the Doctor retired, or just a nod for fun?
