I'm not sure how I feel about this. Don't get me wrong, I love Middle Earth. But how can they give The Hobbit 3 movies when LOTR, which was at least 4x larger in scope, was done in 3 movies as well. Hopefully, they are 2 longer movies with extra footage in the collector's edition.

There is/was a lot of stuff in the LOTR books that can be left out. There is more story to the Hobbit. Leaving parts out can really derail the flow of the story. I can see this being three movies and being successful. I think two 3 hour movies can do the trick as well. But I am definitely in favor of 3 movies. Two Tolkien trilogies?

Peter Jackson Clarifies ‘Hobbit’ Trilogy Talk; Third Movie Based on Tolkien’s Notes

“It’s very premature. I mean we have an incredible source material with the appendices because ‘The Hobbit’ is obviously a novel but we also have the rights to use this 125 pages of additional notes where Tolkien expanded the world of ‘The Hobbit’ published at the end of ‘Return of the King’ and we’ve used some of it so far (and just in the last few weeks as we’ve been wrapping up the shooting) and thinking about the shape of the story. Fran and I have been talking to the studio about other things we haven’t been able to shoot and seeing if we could persuade them to do a few more weeks of shooting. Probably more than a few weeks actually, next year, and what form that would actually end up taking. The discussions are pretty early. So there isn’t really anything to report but there’s other parts of the story that we’d like to tell that we haven’t been able to tell yet.”

Peter Jackson Confirms ‘The Hobbit 3′ For Summer 2014!

Jackson is confirming that he’s been given the go-ahead on Hobbit 3 from Warner Bros., which is funding the fantasy project. Initial reports say the movie will be a Summer 2014 release, breaking from the tradition where Jackson’s Middle-earth movies are released during December (and a year apart). That’s assuming The Hobbit: There and Back Again doesn’t change from a December 2013 release.
