Long as it doesn't go the way of the Pirates movies.

First one was decent, and then about 45 minutes into the 2nd one I paused the movie, looked around to everyone in the room, and said, "What the fuck is going on?" Everyone was like, "I have no idea." We spent the next 20 minutes reading the synopsis on IMDB, still didn't have a fucking clue what the film was about, and then just decided to get drunk and play Scrabble.

I also read that we're finally going to get the live action Star Wars TV series in a couple of years. I might be even more pumped about that. I know that before they were bought by Disney, Lucasfilm came very close to doing this about 10 years ago and it was supposed to be pretty dark and not at all targeted towards kids. Not sure if Disney will want that on their channel or if they have something different in mind.

I voted for it as well. But I'm not sure how much nostalgia factors in.

Rogue One was a really well done film. So was The Last Jedi. You could easily argue that Last Jedi had the most complex story line.

TESB
ANH
RO
ROTS / ROTJ / TFA / TLJ (All of these are equal IMO, all boasting great scenes plus some pretty bad or ridiculous parts, from the Ewoks defeating the Empire troops in ROTJ to the slow motion chase in TLJ)
AOTC
TPM

That's my ranking

Nostalgia definitely factors in for people in their late 30s and older - folks who were little kids when the original trilogy took control of the world. Those originals truly impacted our lives and culture.

One thing I find a bit disappointing about it though is that even folks in their 20's who grew up with the prequels often vote Empire. Empire did not impact their lives, they simply seem to have conformed to general consensus. Since hardcore fanboys are so ruthless, it's better to just conform than argue about opinion.

Well in fairness I don't think that any of I-III were even close to as good. Until the recent batch of movies there really was no contest that Empire was the best. I definitely think that Last Jedi and Rogue One could make strong arguments.

I'm 40. The first movie I ever remember watching in the theater was Return of the Jedi. My grandfather took me. It was epic.

Hate on Ewoks all you want, but as a 5-year-old I didn't give the slightest crap how feasible it was for oversized teddy bears to beat the crap out of a legion of incompetent stormtroopers; I was just excited it happened. I was awestruck by that slimy Jabba, the Rancor, Sarlaac Pit, Yoda's transition into the force, sister reveal, high-speed speeder bike pursuit, gigantic forest battle, Death Star II assault and - to top it all off - Luke's the final showdown with Vader and the Emperor. There was a lot of grand action throughout.

I loved episodes 4 & 5, but 6 was, is and probably always be my favorite. I actually like A New Hope better than Empire, too. Hoth was cool [no pun intended], but Dagobah and Cloud City are actually kinda boring [until the Luke-Vader clash]. There was never really any feel-good payoff with Empire either.

I also think 3 was a really good movie. It gets trashed with 1 and 2 by most, but 3 had some epic action from the opening sequence, very meaningful events in Star Wars lore and did a good job of bridging to 4.

1) Return of the Jedi
2) A New Hope
3) Empire Strikes Back
4) Revenge of the Sith
5-7) I'm not quite sure how I want to order Rogue One, The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi yet. Need to see 8 a few more times before I order them.
8) A Phantom Menace
9) Attack of the Clones

I don't loathe Episodes I and II as much as most people do. I think they're watchable. I do have to skip past the thoroughly awful Anakin & Padme Naboo love crap though.

I'm the same age as you and my list is fairly similar to yours. I have a hard time deciding among the 3 originals but always had a soft spot for ROTJ because as a kid that was by far my favorite of the 3, especially if we're talking about the original versions. ROTJ suffered the most from Lucas' special editions. The Ewoks were no Jar Jar Binks. They got the job done but it's not like they dominated the movie and not like they didn't have tons of help from Han's team on Endor which was only phase one of the attack on the Death Star. Lando, Wedge etc. still had to do their part. The Emperor was just awesome and Vader was his badass self until he wasn't at the very end which was epic.

I'm sure someone will take this the wrong way and attack me for this but I always thought that Empire Strikes Back was a little over-rated. It's an absolutely great movie but so are the other 2. For me it doesn't stand out as being far superior to the other 2. It does have the iconic reveal of Darth Vader being Luke's father, which unfortunately was lost on me. The kids at school, my cousins etc. all spoiled that for me before I saw a single Star Wars movie. Kids that age had no concept of spoiling a movie and as I watched A New Hope for the first time I went into it with the understanding that it was just common sense that Vader was Luke's father and Leia was his sister. I was confused by the fact that this was never acknowledged in that movie. Maybe if I got to experience that the way it was intended I'd see things differently.

As for the prequels, I thought they told a good story but just executed quite poorly. The basic outline was great but a lot of the finer details are where they really suffered. After seeing episodes 7 and 8 I kind of wish they kept George Lucas around for some story ideas but just didn't give him full control or allow him to direct these movies.

Among the movies released in the last 20 years, I think I enjoyed either The Force Awakens or Rogue One the most.

For me it's kind of hard to evaluate the original trilogy in comparison to the newer movies since they were all released before I was born. The original trilogy is definitely what got me into Star Wars as a kid though.

“Empire” had the better ending. Luke loses his hand and finds out Vader is his father. Han is frozen and captured by Boba Fett. It ends on such a down note. Just like in real life. All “Jedi” had was a bunch of Muppets.

I liked Return of the Jedi as a kid but the older I got, the more I liked Empire and less I liked Return of the Jedi. I haven't seen The Last Jedi yet but of the ones I have seen, I'd rank them like this:

1. Empire Strikes Back
2. Revenge of the Sith
3. A New Hope
4. The Force Awakens
5. Return of the Jedi
6. Rogue One
7. Attack of the Clones

8. The Phantom Menace
