goes 3 for 4 on May 17th, with a homer.....you know, something this team never does

and...............has one at bat since, hasn't started since

just fucking hilarious. He is sitting because this team is just such a god damn juggernaut offensively?

2 runs this entire Braves series so far, a series they can still win for sure, but they deserve to lose for not playing a guy that can clearly hit

You get what you deserve. Hard to get behind a team that pulls this bullshit

Joseph was pre-ordained a bench player. This is not a surprise. Howard plays because of veteran respect.
Joseph may get some at bats when we play Detroit.

When a new callup gets 3 hits and then sits on the bench picking his nose for a few days, he forgets his limited achievement, and then when he is called on to pinch hit, he goes to the plate and picks his nose.

i'm still wondering when the changeover occurred with joseph going from a piece of shit bust and amaro giving away pence for free because he's an idiot.. to joseph being compared with sliced bread and indoor plumbling :noidea:

must be the same changeover i missed on how dom brown became a superstar that in no possible way we should trade for bautista :noidea:

Joseph should play 3 games in a row in Detroit with Howard DH'ing. They have 3 righties scheduled so he'll get some good experience.

Howard's at .161/.233 right now. Maybe he'll heat up as weather turns hot. Last July and August he hit .253 and .270 with 8 HR. Then returned to normal with a hefty .108/.105 September, playing only 2 weeks.

Howard 2016:
April: .203/.265/.419, 15 hits, 5 HR, 10 rbi
May: .091/.180/.318, 4 hits, 3 HR, 8 rbi

It's reality. Joseph is all that's left from Amaro's idiotic Pense moves (what ever happened to Schierholtz and Seth Rosin?) With Joseph, we may get something out of it. That's why you can't let him fester. There should be continuity. So play him now and we'll find out if he's sliced bread or just another Dom. But it will still take some time.

The only thing that matters now is whether Joseph can perform better than Howard. We need to play him in order to find out. Joseph suffered with concussions from being a catcher and that affected his hitting. First base has given
him a new lease. You need an open mind with rookies and that is something that you lack.

this is getting ridiculous. the phils were picked by many to be the worst team in the league. the worst team in the league. a good start has a bunch of people doing the "it could be us" type crap. so now joseph, a kid whose playing career just about everyone left for dead, is supposed to play every game so he can help the phils win? (the real reason people want to see him.)

you don't throw young players into the fire. SIMPLE. rare stars come along and you can do it, but even then they still have their flaws badly exposed. you see what's going on with franco. he felt it was his job to carry the team early in the season since it was just him and herrera hitting. now he's spun out of control and who knows when he'll be back. june? july? august? maybe he doesn't react properly until the start of next year. this is what young, inexperienced players do.

you people see guys like ruf CANNOT HIT RIGHTIES (oh, i'm sorry. the phils ruined him.) mayberry was another when he was here (or did the phils ruin him?) AAA isn't MLB. can joseph hit RHP consistently? it's unknown. but there is no reason to just dump him out there game after game, on a team that can't produce for shit, just so he feels the pressure as well. because once they start going something like 0-15 or 1-23, they hit panic mode and only make it worse. then it becomes that much harder for the team to judge what role to give him.

"The only thing that matters now is whether Joseph can perform better than Howard. We need to play him in order to find out."

^ you should be EMBARRASSED for posting that. and it just proves my point people are determined to see the rebuilding phils win right this second, as if they are championship caliber.

joseph is 24, finally healthy and just starting out. howard has never recovered from his injury, is old and his career is probably done after this season. the two are complete opposites and there is no competition or battle for 1st base. the only important thing right now is to make joseph comfortable. he needs to stay healthy, produce solid AB and learn the game as he moves along. if he hits RHP when he gets a chance, then he'll get more starts. if not, it gets extreme focus in the offseason and spring training, so he is fully prepared next year.

this year means nothing. fans getting mad because the phils are losing cannot be taken seriously.

A player can become more comfortible with regular playing time. It's always helpful when the manager shows confidence for him to contribute. You are making too much out of this situation. plus it is more about getting more hits and more runs than we are now. Get a grip on yourself! I am sure that you will be hoping for Joseph
to have poor production in the next 4 days just to prove you were right. Lighten up!

that makes no sense! i'm one of the few people here who extensively follows MILB. i wanted joseph to be called up and i'd love for him to just bash the fuck out of the ball.

you can't understand the phils aren't trying to win now. it's just been a great surprise they have been so far. just like you can't understand howard is done and joseph is the frontrunner to get the 1st base job, so there is no benefit to rushing him.

just like wentz is the eagles QB of the future. there is no need to rush him until he is fully capable of taking over. joseph just made the move to 1st base and hasn't had more than 199 AB since 2012. he is no position to just take over 1st and play every day yet.

but, whatever, you know. if he fails, fans will just claim he's a bust.

The Phillies are not trying to lose either. Joseph is the front runner right now. Next season there will be more
competition. So if Joseph turns out to be a bust so be it.

more competition, from who? loll. and if so, it would be a good thing.

joseph is starting today, and batting cleanup, against a RHP. i don't know what more you people want. assuming he gets 4 AB, that will be 16 in 7 games. a pace better than 2 per game. that would also give him around 260 or so for the year if it played out like that. factor in his AAA time, that's around 350 AB. solid.

hopefully he has some great AB and earns more time. until then, the phils know what they're doing. not you people. not me. the phils.

Alfaro and Knapp are projecting well. Alfaro is still working on catching ability although he has a strong arm. One of these guys could be converted to a 1st baseman if needed. Also the Phillies will have a ton of money available next season to buy a or trade for a player. So there are options.

While I don't necessarily disagree with your overall point, I don't think you've ever given the impression that you believe that you don't know what's best for the Phillies

One could argue that by sitting him all game and having him come in as a pinch hitter against a relief specialist he is more likely to go 0-10 against righties (one PH AB at a time) and lose confidence that way, rather than mixing in a start against a RHP (which they are doing today)

I agree. He needs to face right handers in order to develop timing in his swing. Pinch hitting against righties
can cause his confidence to sink and then he gets labeled as a one trick pony!

over the years, there have only been a few random big things where i truly believed i knew what was better for the team. one i can say was NOT extending ryan howard to that big deal (and it proved to be a huge blow.) another was wanting the rebuild/youth movement as early as possible. i was a huge fan of dumping an ace, cliff lee, to the dodgers for the somewhat unknown (to fans and MLB in general) joc pederson. that also proved to be a huge blow as lee's career ended and pederson has looked very good with the dodgers.

fair argument. however, i do not believe in that sit a day or two and lose your ability to hit bullshit. that's one of those baseball myths to me. catchers, platoon players, nagging injuries.. there are plenty of people who play half seasons or slightly more and do just fine. most of the RHP he would see would most likely just be normal relief.

Are you serious, _phillies_? You're thinking too much about this. That what got Ryno fired. Too dense to do the obvious.
"you don't throw young players into the fire." What fire? It's simple, we're not saying Joseph wins a full time job for the rest of the year if he gets a few hits; but you have to give him more work the next day after getting 3 hits. Holy shit!
