They'd have to give up a player.

But, which one?

Well that's the problem. They aren't trading Brown or Tatum obviously. So who else on that roster has serious trade value? Rozier? I don't see it.

Yeah, but again he doesn't need to be. He can play extended minutes during the regular season to take that burden off of Kyrie and the Celtics won't miss too much. But in the playoffs you'll need Kyrie at peak form. You can even play both together at times since Rozier is a good shooter and Kyrie can play off the ball a bit with his shooting. Just a lot of roster flexibility if played right, which I think Stevens will find a way to do.

Oh sure. The Celtics should be a really strong team next year.

But I'm pretty far from anointing them as the presumptive favorite to go to the finals next year. Way too much change is going to happen in the off-season to do that. Where Lebron and PG go, for instance.

And assuming Kyrie will hold up from the beginning to the end has now become a dangerous assumption

Agree.

I love Rozier.

But, they have to keep him as Kyrie insurance.

Tatum should end every conversation that doesn't include Anthony Davis or Durant....imo

Honestly, who the hell really knows the machinations of the mind of Danny Ainge?

Probably trade Kyrie for as much as you can mid-season. Who knows if he will ever be right again. They can with whatever they get for him, what they have now and all those future picks. You will end up paying Kyrie soon and stuck with a huge contract and him either sitting or retiring early

I think this year we may see another surprise from Danny. IMO only Jayson Tatum and Gordon Hayward are untradeable.....meaning not even an open ear at all by Boston. One because of his ceiling (and he is still a friggin baby) and one because its uncool to sign a FA and then trade them......plus his relationship with Brad.

Boston pundits think Danny would go as high as $14M for 4 years for Smart.

I assume very little with Danny. Many teams must rebuild this year. he is like the Hyena in the shadows waiting for the teams move

The Celtics already offered Smart a qualifying offer of 6 million a year. Reports that Smart is looking for 16-20 million a year and will likely settled in somewhere around 12-14.

I think they would sign him at that amount

Maybe. I guess it depends on whether they think that Kyrie is in the long term plans or not.

Here is the fascinating issue for us to ponder with Danny. He will have four first round picks next year. From a roster construction standpoint it is unwise to draft 4 first rounders in same year. So I can see them packaging one of those picks or even two if they can be in the top 4.

No Smart is not a Kyrie replacement. He is a horrid shooter but his plus/minus is amazing and he can give you that plus/minus each and every game with his defense.

Kyrie is interesting situation. He is available IMO if Kawhi or Anthony D is in a discussion

Celtics are going UP! They have it all: great tradition, coaching, talent and fan base.

I think there is room for both Rozier and Irving to co-exist. If CP3 and Harden can co-exist at PG, it can work for anyone. I don't think you need to make any moves. Maybe offer Warriors Tatum and Rozier for Durant?

Of course he isn't a Kyrie replacement. But the Celtics are already over the cap. Are they really going to take up that kind of salary for Smart when Kyrie is likely to see a significant pay increase next year?

Yeah I think they will. Smart will always give you that performance, its just in his character, and the team falls in line. Wyc has made it clear they will go into the luxury tax space. Its time for banner 18

$14M / year? (too much)

or $3.5M / year ? (which is way too low)

Ok. I guess we'll see. It sure didn't sound like the Celtics and Smart were even close to agreeing on a price. Maybe Smart was pushing for a ridiculous contract and the Celtics would be fine simply overpaying for him.
