Rapid Reaction: New York Mets 3, Washington Nationals 2 - Mets Blog - ESPN

Duda helps make Cespedes a winner in Mets debut

Associated Press:
NEW YORK -- Aug.1-- When the Washington Nationals took the bat out of Yoenis Cespedes' hands in the eighth inning, Lucas Duda let the rest of the National League know how tough it's going to be now to get through the middle of the new Mets' lineup.

Duda hit a tiebreaking double after Cespedes was walked intentionally, leading New York to a come-from-behind, 3-2 victory over the Nationals on Saturday night in front of the second largest crowd ever for a Mets game at Citi Field.

"That's exactly what we're hoping to do, put some guys in the middle of that lineup, where you have bats throughout that can produce some runs," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "You kind of like the way we're headed."

Playing for the first time since being acquired from Detroit on Friday at the non-waiver trade deadline, righty swinging Cespedes was walked by left-handed reliever Matt Thornton (1-1) to face Duda, a lefty bat, even though Duda had already homered twice off Joe Ross on fireworks night and has been on a recent tear.

"We have confidence in (Thornton) every time he faces a lefty," Nationals managerMatt Williams said. "You get an opportunity to get him back in there tomorrow, we'll do it."

With 42,996 fans on their feet and chanting his name, Duda drove a 1-2 pitch the opposite way to left field that short-hopped the wall. Curtis Granderson, who doubled leading off the inning, scored to put New York ahead.

"It's sure nice to have him in our lineup," Duda said. "That's for sure."

The Mets beat the East-leading Nationals with a late hit for the second straight night to move within a game of first place in the division. New York secured a home series win against Washington for the first time since April 19-21, 2013.

New York fell behind in the first on Ian Desmond's two-run single off Jacob deGrom, tiring the Mets All-Star with long at-bats in a 31-pitch inning. But deGrom held the Nationals through six innings, even without his best fastball.

Hansel Robles (3-2) struck out Bryce Harper and Jayson Werth in the eighth for the win.

Jeurys Familia was perfect in the ninth for his 28th save, striking out Michael Taylorwith the elated crowd stand and chanting "Let's go Mets!" for the final out.

Ross held New York without a hit until Duda sent a shot to center field with two outs in the fourth. Duda then homered to left field leading off the seventh for his eighth longball in seven days -- three multihomer games.

Four days earlier, Duda hit one of his three homers in the game against the Padres off Joe's brother Tyson Ross.

Joe Ross allowed only two other hits in 6 1/3 innings.

"Those guys are filthy -- two pretty exceptional pitchers," Duda said.

Cespedes batted third and received a polite standing ovation when he came to the plate in the first. He grounded out in his first two at-bats. But he got a rise out of the crowd in the sixth when he hit a long flyball to left that went foul. He struck out. He was 0 for 3 with the walk.

"The stadium was just how I like to play," Cespedes said through a translator. "It was full. It was full of energy, a lot of screaming fans so I enjoyed that."

New York Mets Yoenis Cespedes 'surprised' by intentional walk - Mets Blog - ESPN

NEW YORK -- After enduring six straight losing seasons, the New York Mets are in an actual pennant race. And even the Washington Nationals are taking notice of the spirited environment in Queens.

The Mets rallied to beat the Nats, 3-2, on Saturday at a sold-out Citi Field. The victory pulled the Amazin's within a game of Washington for first place in the NL East.

"I think it's great," said Nats left fielder Jayson Werth, who last had battled the Mets for first place as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies. "It's been a long time since we've come to play the Mets and had a packed stadium. It's good for baseball. It makes it fun. It's fun playing in games like this. Fans are into it. There's a bunch of people there.

"I don't think it adds any pressure or anything like that. It just makes for an exciting night of baseball and a good atmosphere. We welcome the challenge."

Lucas Duda answers Terry Collins' demand to produce or sit - Mets Blog - ESPN

  • Adam Rubin Espn staff writer
NEW YORK -- With his closer having blown three straight save chances to open the second half, and with Tyler Clippard now on board via a trade with the Oakland Athletics, New York Mets manager Terry Collins recently gave a vote of confidence to incumbent Jeurys Familia.

"I said, ‘You're the guy. You're still the guy. You've earned the right to go back out there. You're in a little bit of a slump right now. It happens. You've got to fight your way out of it,'" Collins said. "And he has."

Familia had been All-Star worthy, converting 27 of 29 chances during the first half.

He appears back on track now after the tough stretch to open the second half.

Familia retired all five batters he faced in a non-save situation in Friday's series opener against the Washington Nationals. On Saturday, he notched the save in a 3-2 win with a perfect, 10-pitch ninth inning that was capped by a game-ending strikeout of Michael Taylor.

"We're not perfect," Familia said. "I'm just trying to move forward and get my confidence back and trust my stuff."

NEW YORK -- The New York Mets placed Kirk Nieuwenhuis on the disabled list with a pinched nerve in his upper back before Sunday's series finale against the Washington Nationals.

Nieuwenhuis had received an anti-inflammatory injection two days ago, but continued to have discomfort when he tried activity on Sunday.

"They said after 48 hours, he will either be fine, or then we'll know where we're at," manager Terry Collins said. "He came in today and they put him through some stuff and he wasn't able to do it."

Michael Conforto, who was demoted to Triple-A Las Vegas before Saturday's game to clear the roster spot for Yoenis Cespedes, officially returned to the Mets. In reality, Conforto was told to hang tight in New York to see whether Nieuwenhuis would need a DL stint and never got on a plane.

Collins said Conforto, because of his elite prospect status, will regularly be in the lineup in left field while with the big league club. He is sitting Sunday, though, because Collins preferred veteran Kelly Johnson face Nats ace Jordan Zimmermann. Collins said he wanted all three new acquisitions -- Cespedes, Johnson and Juan Uribe -- in the lineup Sunday given the magnitude of the game.

Conforto's time with the big league club may only last through the upcoming series against the Miami Marlins. Michael Cuddyer may be ready to come off the DL for next weekend's series against the Tampa Bay Rays in St. Petersburg.

"Michael's got a very, very good idea of the strike zone," Collins said about Conforto. "He's got a very good swing. His plate discipline is outstanding. One of the things he's experienced is that at the big-league level, when you're a rookie, the balls that are close to the plate that may not be strikes in the minor leagues, they may be strikes up here. That buffer zone that they call on the plate, he's got to start protecting it a little bit. But he's going to be very good. He's a good-looking hitter. He can hit to all fields. He's got power.

"I'll tell you what's impressed me is the other parts of the game that people didn't talk about. This guy is an outstanding baserunner. And I've thought he's handled left field very, very well. And I heard he was a below-average defender in college."
