THOR!!!

NEW YORK (6/15)-- Noah Syndergaard made the New York Mets look pretty smart Monday night.

Just a few hours after the Mets designated Dillon Gee for assignment, Syndergaard showed why he belongs in the team’s rotation over Gee -- and it’s not even close.

The 22-year-old rookie was positively electric against the Toronto Blue Jays, striking out a career-high 11 batters in six innings. The Mets' dramatic comeback in the 11th inning was sweet, but Syndergaard's performance is what should have their fans salivating following a 4-3 victory.

After giving up a run on two hits in a 32-pitch first inning, Syndergaard held the Blue Jays hitless over his next five frames -- the same Blue Jays who had won 11 in a row and were averaging eight runs per game during the streak.

"It means a lot," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "These guys are the hottest team in baseball, they’ve got a tremendous lineup, and after the first inning, he took control of it. I was very impressed with the way he went about it."

Syndergaard went about it with a fastball consistently in the upper 90s, topping out at 99 mph, along with a decent curveball and a better changeup.

He said he made a slight mechanical adjustment early, without going into detail, that enabled him to right the ship after the rocky start. Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista took him deep in the top of the first, but that was the only blemish on the young hurler's night.

Syndergaard said it was about as good as he's felt in his first year in the big leagues.

"I felt I could throw anything -- fastball, curveball, changeup -- in any count tonight," he said. "That’s ultimately the reason why I had so much success."

"That’s the best changeup I’ve seen him have -- when you’re trying to hunt that fastball and he uses that changeup, that’s where all the strikeouts came from," Collins said. "Very, very, very good outing after the first inning, just outstanding, and very happy for him because he needed one of those right now."

Syndergaard had a 1.82 ERA after his first four major league starts, but he had lost his past two starts, giving up 11 runs in just 10 innings. For all the hype about the hard-throwing righty, his numbers entering Monday's game were rather underwhelming -- a 2-4 record and a 4.15 ERA.

He didn't get his third win, after closer Jeurys Familia gave up a game-tying homer to Bautista in the ninth inning. But he surely gained a confidence boost in his ability to get the job done at this level.

That's a good thing because Syndergaard's not going anywhere -- the demotion of the veteran Gee clearly indicates as much.

Ironically, Gee is the reason Syndergaard got called up from Triple-A in the first place. When Gee went on the disabled list in early May with a groin injury, the Mets decided it was time to give their top prospect a shot.

And on a Monday in mid-June, the Mets decided they'd seen enough of Dillon Gee. Noah Syndergaard, on the other hand, left us all wanting to see more.

FIRST PITCH...(6/16).... Matt Harvey will be on the mound for the New York Mets on Tuesday night, but that's not quite as reassuring as it once was.

The Mets' young ace has lost three of his past four starts, with a 7.20 ERA during that stretch, giving up eight home runs in the four games.

He'll try to get back on track Tuesday against a potent Toronto Blue Jays lineup that was mostly held in check by teammate Noah Syndergaard on Monday.

It's the second of two between these two teams at Citi Field before they head to Toronto to play two more.

TUESDAY'S NEWS REPORTS:
  • After the Mets designated Dillon Gee for assignment on Monday, it's time for the team to call up young lefty Steven Matz, writes columnist John Harper in the Daily News.

  • Syndergaard was dominant Monday night, and Matz can be the same, writes columnist Kevin Kernan in the Post.

  • Matz should have been here already, writes columnist Anthony Rieber inNewsday.

Familia not available tonight, probably a good thing for him.

We might see the new call up, Akeel Morris at some point if need be to face a righty or 2.
Harvey needs a good outing tonight....and we have to score some runs for him.

This bullpen is embarrassing, just pathetic. Bring in Montero, put Gee back there, bring arms in, it's absurd how awful these guys are.
