There's some truth in this really.

He'll be 30 and a FA at the end of this season. So it's time - past time really - for him to show what he is really going to be. Not trying to sound down on Holland, but when you've seen him dominate at times and then struggle to look like a # 5 starter at others, it just frustrates me.

He's a frustrating player. Would love for him to just be consistent. We don't need 8IP/1ER from the guy every 5 days, and I think he tries to do that.

He isn't a free agent after this year unless we decide not to pick up the option. We have control over him for two more years after this one at a very reasonable price.

I don't think he has looked anything like a #5 starter in a very long time except in conjunction with trying to come back from an injury and most pitchers do that. The only thing that has frustrated me about him is him being injured and I could say the same about Yu and Perez and Colby. It may frustrate me, but I don't blame the pitchers for being injured.

I think Derek has proven himself to be a very good pitcher when healthy.

I would think both Hamels and Yu also try to do that. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think they do. I will take 7 innings and 2 ERs though every once in awhile though.

They do, I'm sure. And I certainly respect that competitive nature. But with Dutch, I'm not sure he's quite able to be that guy. To use an analogy, Dutch strikes me as a guy who likes to drive fast, but when he has to swerve he ends up over-correcting and has a hard time getting the car back on the road. If he doesn't have to turn the wheel, he's fine.

Glad to see Banny get an extension.

Also, thoughts for 3B coach Tony Beasley. Diagnosed with (treatable) rectal cancer.

All I can point to is how he fared in 2013 even though his 2011 year was pretty good as well. I think he finally developed into a quality starting pitcher at age 26, one that belongs in the top half of a rotation. I think when healthy we can expect that kind of performance or better from him for the duration of his present contract at least. Once he came into his own he has only struggled for a few games last year due to his coming back from a long term shoulder injury. He also got his pitching hand hit by a batted ball which affected him. If he is healthy he is not a concern of mine at all.

I think Derek has proven himself to be a very good pitcher when healthy.

I checked the numbers on baseball-reference and misread it. But according to it and sportrac he has a $1.5 option for 2017 only. I'm assuming it's a team option. If it's his, it'll be a easy decision regardless of what happens, barring injury, in 2016.

But in my mind he has been inconsistent throughout his career. In 2011, I thought he might challenge to be a # 1 starter, and certainly a solid #2. On this staff, if/when Yu gets healthy he'll be #3 and there's certainly no sin in being considered this behind Hamels and Darvish. Fact, might be some pretty good company.
