Sorry. No way am I fine with this. If we just won a SB sure. We have had 1 good season. And Goff was nothing before Ben Johnson got here. What happens if Johnson leaves next year? I would have waited.
He won an NFC Championship game over Drew Brees without Ben Johnson.

I’m not all that worried about Johnson taking a HC job tbh. More concerned with Holmes blowing draft capital on projects.

Well, of course not. There are maybe 4-5 elite QB’s out there.

I think Goff lands around 8-10. He is around top 5 in several stats, but I don’t think he has that next gear to make him elite. He also won’t cost us what an elite QB costs his team.

I am curious what the alternatives are? Goff at his best is top 10, Lions have everything it takes to make him his best. Based on the teams current talent level I don't think we are not likely to see a pick at the top of the first round, and we just saw 6 QBs go in the top 12.

I am fine to lock in a known quantity that is just below elite over rolling the dice on something better falling through the cracks in a future draft.

Even if they got lucky, how often is a qb elite day 1? We would be wasting 3 years of our cores prime hoping the future qb pans out. This was the correct call, and I think Goff is good enough to lead a team to a championship.....pending oline.

Lions should be putting extra money/draft into the lines future every year now, no matter how stacked it appears to be.
The amount is too high. 40 mil I could live with. He is now the second highest paid QB or something. Not likely at the level of Mahomes and company. He would have taken 40 a year too most likely. This contract he probably signed before the ink was dry.

I agree here, 53 is more than I wanted. I am not so sure he would have just taken 40, he had all of the leverage in this one. I will take an overpay to keep the team competitive over hoping we find a quality replacement to save money. I completely get not liking the amount though.

Oh no doubt but overspending when it is not necessary wont help either. An extra 10 mil a year would have gotten us another talented player at another position. 40ish/yr would have been plenty for Goff.

This basically says we have 3 years to win a SB and then we will suck again.

I am not so sure, he is still only 33 at that point, he is not done at that point. I think they should be drafting some QBs in the mid-rounds and give them 3-4 years to see what they become. For all we know, Hooker may be that guy.

It's the way these extensions go. By year two of his extension he'll probably be back in the middle of the pack again.

Remember when the Redskins didn't want to pay Kirk Cousins? How did that turn out?

Great for him, unfortunately for the team, the division just got tougher this offseason. Now with thst contract, he will have a new level of expectations.

Even if you dont want to wait why 53 mil? No way. Could have gotten him for 10 mil less.

And Kirk has not won Jack shit yet so how bad was it really? They have Daniels now and will be better for it than with Kirk. Not to mention ATL already drafted Kirks replacement.

In the next year, we'll see extensions/new contracts for Tua, Dak, Lawrence, Purdy and Love. It's a year to year game of leapfrog. If anything, it's mildly surprising that he didn't pass Burrow too to be at the top of the pack (briefly).

Nobody gives a discount like Brady did. Another reason why he is the goat. Did everything to help his team.

Paying similar money for a QB that is just leaps and bounds better than Goff is just crazy talk and is just aiming a shotgun at yourself 1-2 years from now. Most all of that money to Goff is guaranteed.

Dak is gonna get paid at some point, his market value just keeps going up after Jerry Jones gambled and lost on signing him to a new contract.

I doubt they could've gotten him that cheaply. Cousins was only as cheap as he signed for because of his age and injury status.
