NEW YORK--8/3 -- It's no longer automatic that Lucas Duda gets left out of the Mets lineup when the opposing starter is left-handed. But Duda didn't play last Tuesday against Cole Hamels, and he isn't starting Sunday against Madison Bumgarner.

Two different circumstances, Mets manager Terry Collins explained Sunday morning.
With Hamels, it was simply the matchup. Duda is 1 for 13 in his career against the Phillies lefty, with seven strikeouts. And with Bumgarner?
"Some of these guys are just different," Collins said. "This guy throws across his body, and he's hard to pick up. If you're going to give a left-hander a day off, this is going to be the guy."

So, in addition to sitting Duda, Collins gave Daniel Murphy his first day off since the All-Star break. Curtis Granderson is the only left-handed hitter in the Mets lineup against Bumgarner.

Collins said he considered playing Duda instead of Granderson, but that would have required Eric Campbell to play right field, where Campbell is less comfortable than at first base.

Duda had started four of the past six games against lefties before Sunday. He started only two of the first 16 games in which the Mets faced a left-hander this season.

Colon goes for 200: Bartolo Colon goes for his 200th career win Sunday. Colon would be just the third active pitcher with 200 (Tim Hudson and CC Sabathia are the others). He also would be just the third Dominican-born pitcher to win 200 (joining Juan Marichal and Pedro Martinez), and just the third pitcher to win his 200th game while wearing a Mets uniform.

Tom Seaver? No. Dwight Gooden? No. The only two pitchers who got their 200th win while pitching for the Mets, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, were Orel Hershiser (1999) and Martinez (2006).

• DeGrom takes the fifth: Jacob deGrom has a 1.04 ERA in his past five starts, all wins. Elias reports that deGrom is the first rookie since Dontrelle Willis in 2003 to have a five-game winning streak with such a low ERA.

"A real live arm," said Giants pitcher Jake Peavy, who lost to deGrom Saturday. "He has some deception with his length, and he had a good breaking ball. I think he has a good chance to be really good."

Elias also reported that Peavy was the first pitcher since Elmer Dessens in 2002 to take a loss in a game in which he carried a perfect game one out into the seventh inning.

Yikes....N_M....I hope you didn't actually go to this stinker today.....:L

Game was over when TC wrote the lineup card.......smh
Sitting 3 of the best hitters on the team against 1 of the better pitchers in the league was beyond stupid.
Colon was totally out of sorts as well.

Hopefully they respond with a little life and some pride tomorrow to get a series split.

Luckily I went Saturday night, one of the best games I've ever been to. Buddy of mine is going to today's game as part of a company outing (my company does no such thing).

• In his first start since the non-waiver trade deadline passed, Bartolo Colon surrendered six runs in 4 2/3 innings and served up homers to Hunter Pence and Brandon Belt as the Giants routed the Mets, 9-0, Sunday at Citi Field. Madison Bumgarner became the second Giants pitcher in three days to toss a complete-game two-hitter, joining Ryan Vogelsong (on Friday).

The Mets now trail the NL East-leading Nationals by eight games, and are 6.5 games out of a wild-card spot.

The last time two pitchers in the same series tossed complete-game two-hitters or better against the Mets came in 1965, when the Dodgers’ Sandy Koufax and Claude Osteen accomplished it, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Colon was bidding to become the third pitcher to notch his 200th win in a Mets uniform. He also was bidding to become the third active pitcher and the third Dominican-born pitcher to reach that plateau.

Orel Hershiser and Pedro Martinez won No. 200 as a Met. Hudson (213 career wins) and CC Sabathia (208) are the lone active pitchers to have reached that total. Juan Marichal (243) and Martinez (219) are the lone Dominican-born pitchers to have reached 200 wins.

Colon’s next crack will be Friday in Philadelphia. He has a 1.45 ERA in his 10 wins this season. He has a 6.91 ERA in his other 12 starts.

• Anthony McCarron in the Daily News delves into Terry Collins sitting Duda on Sunday. Collins cited the southpaw Bumgarner’s cross-body delivery as being difficult for a lefty batter, although Bumgarner entered the start with lefties hitting .256 and righties hitting .259 against him this season.

Matt Harvey's first serious mound session since undergoing Tommy John surgery is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Read more in the Post.

FIRST PITCH: The Mets look to salvage a split of a four-game series against the wild card-leading Giants in Monday’s matinee finale at Citi Field.

Dillon Gee (4-4, 3.77 ERA) opposes right-hander Tim Hudson (8-8, 2.71) in the 12:10 p.m. game.

Gee has surrendered 15 runs in 16 2/3 innings in three second-half starts.

Hudson is the active wins leader against the Mets with 17 career victories.

NEW YORK -- Since the All-Star break, the Mets rank last in the majors in batting average (.196), 29th in slugging percentage (.303) and 28th in runs (45, in 16 games). So team officials continue to weigh promoting Kirk Nieuwenhuis and/or Matt den Dekker from Triple-A Las Vegas in an attempt to provide a jolt.

Still, a team official said it remains to be determined whether the Mets make the call-up(s) before rosters expand on Sept. 1.

i

The Mets continue to weigh promoting Kirk Nieuwenhuis and/or Matt den Dekker.

Otherwise, the Mets likely would have to dismiss Bobby Abreu and/or Chris Young.

Since a 4-for-4 performance on June 13 against the Padres, Abreu is batting .120 (6-for-50) and has one extra-base hit. He's particularly flunked in his primary role: pinch-hitting. Abreu is hitless in his past 22 at-bats as a pinch hitter and hitting .065 (2-for-31) in that role for the season.

Young, now late in a one-year, $7.25 million deal, is hitting .207 with eight home runs and 28 RBIs in 242 at-bats this season. He is starting his 10th game since July 21 in Monday's matinee series finale against the Giants.

den Dekker hit .420 (42-for-100) with one home run and 16 RBIs and had a .508 on-base percentage in 29 games in July with Las Vegas.

Nieuwenhuis was demoted to Las Vegas on July 24, when the Mets called up Wilmer Flores as a hedge after Ruben Tejada was beaned with a fastball in Seattle. Nieuwenhuis has now spent 10 days in the minors, making him eligible to return. He is batting .246 with two home runs and 11 RBIs in 57 major league at-bats this season.
