Dick Tomey, former Arizona football coach, dies at 80
I will always hold Coach Tomey's work in high regard. I got to see a lot of him while I was teaching at San Jose State University. He inherited a team that was an absolute mess (Lowest APR in the FBS, a lot of crime (including a player after whom a special Fulmer Cup award is named), and very little support from a University that saw its athletic department bleeding money.) Not only did Coach Tomey play a major role in turning things around, he coached the Spartans to the only Bowl win I would see while I was there, by beating the host Lobos (or Loobs, as some fans spelled it) in the ingural New Mexico Bowl.
Naturally, he will be remembered more for taking the Hawaii program from Division II to Division I-A, and for his many successes at the University of Arizona. But one thing is for certain - he will be missed.
