I can never remember the formats and what is played when so here is a nice little breakdown...

Scoring: All 28 matches - eight Friday, eight Saturday and 12 Sunday - will use match-play scoring. There will be only 18 holes of play. If competitors are tied at the end of 18 holes of play the match is all square and the teams receive a half-point each.

As the defending champion, should the Ryder Cup end in a 14-14 tie, Europe retains the Cup. The U.S. team must score at least 14.5 points to win.

Schedule of matches: There will be eight matches Friday and Saturday, split in morning and afternoon sessions - one featuring four matches of fourball (best ball) play and four matches of foursome (alternate-shot) play. Those matches feature two-man teams. On Sunday, the final day of play, 12 singles matches are played, with each member of the two teams playing an individual match.

Fourball play: On Friday and Saturday, the teams will compete in four fourball matches both days. The matches use two-man teams with each of the four players competing as though in individual play. The best score recorded by the two players is the team score on each hole and that score is matched against the best score by the opposing team. Those scores are recorded to determine the score in the match.

Foursomes play: Four foursome matches, again featuring two-man teams, will also be played Friday and Saturday. In these matches, the two players for each team alternate shots until the ball is holed. One player will hit the tee shot, with his playing partner hitting the second shot. The player who teed off will then take the third shot and so on until the hole is completed and a score is recorded.

Singles play: Sunday's final day of play will feature all 12 members of each team competing in individual matches, using match-play scoring.

Here's a nice little montage. A couple years old, but very nicely done.

Go Europe!!!

Happy now Elo?

Seriously though I think that this will be the first time in a while when Europe is actually the favourite. I could see the US pulling this on out though.

Back in 95, the Ryder Cup was at Oak Hill. Oldsmobile had a promo where if you went in to test drive their new flagship Aurora sedan, you'd get a free dozen Top Flite Z Balatas with the 95 Ryder Cup logo on them. In the pre Pro V-1 days, to me at least, a z balata was a decent ball.

At the time, I subscribed to a bunch of golf mags and each one of them gave me a coupon for the free dozen. I was only 16 at the time so the salesman wouldn't let me test drive the car but just gave me the golf balls. One dozen for each coupon - I got 8 boxes of them. I did feel bad afterwards and had my dad go in and actually test drive the car (and get his free dozen as well).

This one will end 14-14 BOOK IT!

I'm cheering for the US mainly because Tom Watson is the captain. I also like the young guys he's selected (although not taking Billy Horschel may turn out to be costly).

This is the first time in a while I'm sort of rooting for the US. I'm a big Watson fan and no Eldrick makes the team more palatable.

Not having the hottest Yank on the squad is bad juju for sure.

I'm not sure the USA boys have enough to win the cup back, especially since the match is being played in Scotland. I like what Phil did with his quick quip, IE; laying down the gauntlet with some psychological warfare. It's about all we've got.

Jordan Spieth is the difference maker. US wins 14.5 to 13.5. That's my prediction.

Rory and Sergio give it away down the stretch and Keegan and Phil take out the "super pair."

USA up 2.5 to 1.5 after the morning matches!

It's a little breezy at GlenEagles (love the toques that some of the players are sporting).

Stenson and Rose win 2&1 over Mahan and Johnson - USA 2 1/2, Europe 3 1/2. Europe might sweep the afternoon session.
