latos is a stud

I like the Trade. Grandal was expendable, as too was Yonder. The Reds still need to acquire a 3B and will need another 1B in the next 3 years.

He has just filthy stuff. He and Cueto...over the next 4 seasons...are gonna win a hit load of games. Velocity around 94/95.

"On September 7, 2010, Latos set a major league record with a 7 inning, 10 strikeout performance in a win against the Dodgers. The victory was Latos' 15th consecutive start logging at least 5 innings and allowing 2 or fewer earned runs, the longest streak in modern baseball history (since 1900) according to Elias Sports Bureau. Previously the mark had been set by Greg Maddux (1993–94) and Mike Scott (1986), who had such streaks lasting 14 starts"

Reds have another stud 1B in the minors...Soto, I think? Whoever it was hit 31 Hr's last year in the minors.

Reds made a move to go all in this year and next. I like it. Alonso was stuck as he's not a LF, and Grandal wasn't going to see the majors anytime soon with Mersoraco up here. The reliever kind of hurt because I think he would have ended up as the closer, but 'pen arms are a lot easier to find than top flight quality starting pitching. If all that was standing between Latos and the Reds was a reliever...you send the reliever every time and twice on Sunday.

I wasn't all that impressed by Alonso - They say the kid has a big-league bat, but I'm not buying him as the can't miss prospect that he has been sold as.

Have to go all in this year - The division is up for grabs and Votto is still affordable. This all changes after next season.

Why are you not buying that he has a big league bat, moron? he made it to the majors in less than 1 full minor league season.

Last year...he hit .330 with a .943 OPS, basically platooning, at the age of 24. It was the first year he even saw over 30 MLB At bats.

How can you even say that, you fucking peon? All the guy can do is hit.

Dude can rake. He showed that. He has little flaw(s) in his swing. He's going to be a very good hitter.

In SD he may only hit about 20HR's or so, but he's going to get a lot of doubles in that park.

Where did I say he didn't have a big-league bat? I said I had my doubts about him as a prospect overall. He hits well to all fields, is patient at the plate and can probably hit for decent average right now. There are legitimate questions about his power that have been blamed on injury, he's slow, and he is potentially an extreme liability in the field. He might be Sean Casey without the glove. Congrats.

When Votto came up he was poor defensively, but he worked his ass off at it and won a Gold Glove this year.....Alonzo will get a chance to do the same, and we'll see how that goes......anyway you have to give something up to get something, and Alonzo and Grandal were expendable right now.....Latos is young, and they have control of him for four years......gets a higher percentage of ground balls, too, which is important for pitching in GABP....

Votto is signed through 2013. I wouldn't have parted with Alonzo. I think the chances of Votto resigning are somewhere around 10% and will be moved after next year. Somebody is going to throw an absurd amount of money at him and he's not going to turn that down.

Latos is good but not ace material and Cincinnati sold the damn farm to get him. The padres got the better of this deal.

I agree. Latos is on his way to being one of the best number two guys in baseball but the Reds will be in some serious trouble if he has to be number one. The Reds play in a hitters park and if they lose some bats to FA then they'll be SOL because the Reds have historically farmed their players and not acquired big name bats off the market.
