The NFL needs something to dominate the headlines between the Super Bowl and the draft.

This was my exact thought. I think they saw with just how engaged people stayed with the NFL when Deflategate dominated everything sports they realized they have to have an off season story line that will keep fans engaged. I mean when no games are being played and the NFL is still the most popular sport to talk about you know you have something. So yeah this will be dragged out as much as they can in the hopes of recreating that media storm they had.
