Never heard of it... Looks good

I can't remember how I discovered it, it got a little bit of publicity since it won the foreign film Oscar and was even nominated for Original Screenplay but I think I still found it completely by accident. Glad I did though.

Well, no, we can discuss why I did/did not like a film. Just know that it will be different to each viewer. Like I could give reasons I dislike the first Godfather, but I don't think anyone would like me to go into detail...

Why not? I gave some of my reasons for not liking TWBB and Deer Hunter. Nobody protested. You don't like Godfather. Ok. Why not?

In no order
  • Too long with too little going on
  • Michal Corleone's character arc felt forced, with no one single "turning point" or points, i.e. Walter White or Peter Parker
  • Pacing problems (relatively quick (at least by Godfather standards) buildup, and then blah blah blah he moves to Sicily or wherever)
  • I don't like young Al Pacino (hence Scarface being trash)
  • Lack of interesting supporting characters, unlike, say- Goodfellas or The Departed
  • But my major complaint is that the movie thinks that I will be inherently drawn to morally corrupt behavior/characters. Bad characters are cool and all, but they need much better acting than that done by Pacino. Bad characters aren't cool just because they're bad. Michael Corleone is like the Superman of mobster villains

I will have to check it out. Never heard of "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen" until my fiance and her parents went to a dinner and a movie (old theater in CT where you literally eat dinner while watching the movie) and that's the one they picked.

A movie with sub standard audio quality is an objectively BAD movie.
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly?

HORRIBLE sound quality (although one of the best scores in cinematic history) and still one of the best movies ever.

Exception/rule? I'm trying to think of too many other movies that have great cinematography and sub-standard sound.

Gran Torino would qualify, in another regard.

The acting in that movie was very bad, but still an 8+ rating in my book.

Dunno if I'd go 'very bad.' Not up to standard with some of his other movies? Sure. Don't get me wrong, I get the concept of movies not being evenly great in all aspects. I couldn't stand TWBB based on the writing of the ending. Doesn't change the GREAT cinematography and score. Editing too. Amazing.

Which is what blew me away when that ending happened. WTF did THAT come from?

Whose acting was bad, because Clint and the main Asian guy were terrific in my book

Clint was OK, but the two kids were gawd-awful, I thought.

I can't provide examples since I haven't seen the movie in years, but that was the main feeling I had when I saw it.

I just saw Gran Torino about a week ago and it almost seems like there were a couple of rushed scenes. In terms of bad acting, the Asian girl isn't as dynamic in range as id like and the scene where Eastwood locks the boy in the room and the boy is trying to sound angry sounded really...odd.

Fucking "A" on those.
I'm trying to wrap my head around Good Will Hunting being a 10 though.
Just might be.

A Wonderful Life. I watch that every time it's on. :thumb:
