Looks to me like there has to be a deal made somehow to free up some cap space to resign Clifford. The 1-year deal for Lewis must be in anticipation of the cap going up next year so a better raise can be gotten.
Most likely a deal will be made involving a defender - the Kings now have 9 (Greene, Ellerby, Muzzin, Doughty, Voynov, Martinez, Mitchell, Regehr and Schultz) and I can't see them going into the season with that number. Obvious choices will be Muzzin and Martinez.
There is also Waivers, so that will be an option too hoping another team picks up whoever they decide to Waive. Obvious choice would be Ellerby or Schultz (even though they just signed him - depends how he looks in camp).
They also have 14 forwards under contract for a total of 25 players so two guys will be on the move for sure one way or another to hit that 23 by Opening Night. That might include Toffoli going back down since he's still Waivers exempt.
They need to be cap compliant by Opening Night however so there is still plenty of time. A lot can happen between now and then.
Mitchell needs to be deemed healthy before buying him out. I'm sure DL has talked to Clifford and told him to be patient either way. If Mitchell is healthy and comes back someone has to go, but Clifford is coming back.
Clifford isn't my concern either, it's Mitchell. That dude is lights out and runs that defense when he is healthy. He's probably the most complete defenseman the Kings have - solid on D, will chip in/jump in just a little bit when necessary.
I agree with Deader, King is the man out. Him or Nolan.
DL didn't have the option of waiting with the arbitration filers like he has with Clifford, that's why I think Nolan (that filed) is going bye bye. DL, I'm sure didn't like this.
