That is quite the list.
I didn't do an exact count, but probably 200 cars???

would have been nice if they listed engine size and options.
it's like a time capsule

Amazing. But I wonder whether you'd be better off buying some old Chevy that's been driven a bit or one of these? Every piece of plastic and rubber is toast and has to be replaced anyway...and much of the metal.

i live in omaha and have seen all the news footage of a lot of theses cars and other than dust you dont see any wear and tear. These cars were not just sitting out in the elements they were stored inside and protected from most types of weather.

Yeah, wow. I guess I'm just a little jaded after finishing the project on my Wagoneer. The kid I bought it from spent almost $20k and I quickly spent about 6k on just little stuff...and Waggy parts are just shit cheap and plentiful.

Even a new car sitting all that time, it seems to me, would need everything mechanical redone. Bearings, suspension, exhaust, every hose and line, brakes, all pumps have to be replaced, heat element, a/c, engine mounts, rubber around the windows and doors, cooling system replaced and hope it didn't leak into engine, replace all vacuum tubes, replace every light socket and bulb because they've fused with electrolysis, rebuild carb, leather will be all dried-out, fuse connections will all have electrolysis, etc ... the engine would have to be rebuilt even if there's no internal rust just to replace all the gaskets. (but there's gotta be some rust after all that time)

And those are just a few things that pop-up in my drunken mind. There's always a hundred little things you never thought of that are a PITA...like the carpet glue fused to the pan and new carpet won't stick until you grind it off - or whatever.

I bet the best car that sat new for 40+ years will need at least $40k just to be a daily driver and nothing special.

I can see why some of those cars didn't sell at the time.
did you see that '67 Impala? 396/4spd. no radio, no pwr steering, no a/c, no nothing. but it would be great to have today.

I think juice is right about the restorations. those cars didn't have a lot of plastic, but the rubber seals around the windows/trunk are gone, all the rubber and gaskets under the hood are probably toast. but wouldn't it be fun to put it back together and drive.

so, 500 cars total.
if I put the total dollar amount at $5million dollars, would you take the over or under????

I'd take the over.

Even the cars you see going for $100,000 + in the Mecum auto auctions have had some restoration work done on them. Even if they're stored indoors there is no avoiding it. Rubber gaskets dry rot naturally without being in the elements.

What's important to these buyers is that all the numbers match, that they have low mileage, and they are the first owner.

Buying the vehicle for $20,000 and doing a frame off restoration for another $25 - 35K is a good investment either for resale, adding it to their collection, or showing it.

Most of these buyers will have them restored to what they looked like brand new factory 'exact'.

Myself, I'd have it restored and cherry it out with nice rims, a non-era paint job, wide tires, modern suspension, etc..

Like the '67 Impala? 396/4spd. no radio, no pwr steering, no a/c, no nothing that outofyourmind was referring to.

That car would be bitchin', but wouldn't be factory original show condition like most of these buyers want.

I wonder if you can buy one of these cars and hold the MSO open, then restore it, then take to Mecum or Barrett/Jackson and sell it there, so as to let that person be the 1st owner.

I could see some really big numbers that way.

The MSO is open as long as you don't register it, no?

You don't have to register it until you intend to drive it on the street I believe.

I could see that.
I wonder what most people will have in mind for these cars.
Me, I'd do the original thing.
I think you said you would do some mods.

Do you think that a lot of these cars will just be bought, to be resold without doing a thing to them??

I don't know. I'd assume they're being bought for private collections.

I'd bet Jay Leno is eyeballing some stuff.

I couldn't help myself from tricking out whatever I bought and I'd drive it occasionally. It's just me.

Most of these types of buyers will have the original hub-caps on them when they're done. If it ever leaves their collection for a show or something it'll be by trailer.

Was looking at this a bit more yesterday. You know, I bet just having been bought at this auction probably adds 20% + to the value of a restoration because a buyer knows where it's been. So many car histories are nebulous - with this group of cars you know what you're getting.

those cars don't really look like they are in that bad of shape.

95% of the cars have sat outside for decades and the interior and carpet crumbles to the touch. Still a goldmine for the collectors though
