Totally deserves it.

I'd be fine with him just pitching 1 inning.

Doubt I'll watch the game, but I'll check out highlights later so I can see the M's play. Really want to see Seager.

Agree 100%. 1 inning is plenty for Felix. No need to risk any fluke accidents.

I have always thought they should have a 1 inning max limit on pitchers.

It happens every time a Hall of Fame player or even just a well-liked player announces his retirement a year or more before he actually plans to retire (the Brett Favre saga in the NFL comes to mind). I don't remember much about the broadcast of the 2001 All-Star game here, but I'm sure it was Ripken-centric. Same with Rivera last year. It did get kind of annoying (particularly when you factor in the Nike commercial on top of the broadcast itself), but it wasn't unexpected.

Was at dinner while I was watching the game, so I didn't have volume. I'm so sick and tired of hearing about him. They might as well have re-named the ASG the "Goodbye Derek Jeter" ceremony.

The big controversy about the A.S. game is that people are pissed they never gave Tony Gwynn any mention or moment of silence. I understand their point and it should have happened, but I guess MLB didn't want to put a damper on Derek Jeter Night.

It's too bad they couldn't take a few minutes out of the Jeter fest to recognize Gwynn. I was at the 2001 all-star game with the whole Cal Ripken story. It didn't seem like that one was near as over the top as the Jeter one was. Maybe being at the game made it different then watching it on TV though

Jeter and Ripken are tow of the most overrated players in MLB history. The last seven years of Ripken's streak hurt the Orioles alot more than it helped them.

Jeter has been a solid player, but he has never, in any season been the best player on his team and he has never, in any season, been the best player at his position. He has also capatalized from having an all star lineup around him in most seasons, and playing in a bandbox. And I don't understand why an income tax evader and a spreader of gential herpes somehow has an unblemished reputation? Fuck that.

I, too, am surprised that Tony Gwynn's death didn't receive much attention during the all-star game. They mentioned it during the broadcast, of course, but I don't remember seeing a moment of silence or anything for him. I guess maybe they figured that the Stand Up to Cancer moment of silence worked for that purpose, since that's what got him, but I don't even think they segued into it by mentioning him.

Jeter led his team in WAR in the following seasons:
1998
1999
2001 (tied for the lead)
2006
2009

So that's 5 seasons (3 of which were championship teams) where you can argue Jeter was the best player on the Yankees.

As for Ripken, from 1992-1998 he averaged .270/18/82 with a 96 OPS+ and 3.3 WAR/season, which I wouldn't call "hurting the team." From 1992-1996, he was well above average for shortstop standards (3.9 WAR averaged for those seasons).
