This has been an awesome season to finally break the awful drought in Mariners history. Making the playoffs and having an emerging superstar to be the face of the franchise. This is great.

So for just being all-in on Julio from Day 1 we get an extra (valuable?) pick and Baltimore gets 0 benefit (including not getting the extra year) for holding Rutschman back, trying to save a year of player control? That is hilarious.

It is weird. I don't get the reasoning behind it.

..........but we will take it!

I'm sure they were provisions in the CBA that the player's association pushed for. Incentivizes teams not holding back their players to delay paying them.

I may be a little fuzzy with my info but here is the teams logic behind calling up star players in may vs start the season on the 25 man roster

They ( the ball clubs ) were able to extend service time by another full year year for young players by NOT starting the season with them on the 25 man big league club. This practice cost certain young players money as it extended their yearly committments with their current ball clubs.

The league imposing the sanctions ( or bonuses like with Julio and the Mariners ) rewards the Mariners in this instance as Julio broke camp and started opening day.

I just heard that the pick is actually #29 in the draft which is basically a first round pick. Pretty cool.
