Report: Raptors to retain Dwane Casey as head coach
New general manager Masai Ujiri has walked in the door in Toronto and is cleaning house for the Raptors. Assistant GM Ed Stefanski is out along with some scouts and other front office personnel.
One person he's likely to keep, though? Head coach Dwane Casey. Via the Toronto Sun:
Casey, according to league sources, has already spoken at length with Ujiri and (Raptors CEO Tim) Leiweke and would seem safe from any purge. He has a year left on his contract.
Before being hired by the Raptors, Casey was regarded as one of the top assistants in the league and a hot candidate to be a head coach. But with a mediocre roster, Casey hasn't been able to find much success so far in Toronto. The team has shown signs of completely buying into his defensive, tough-minded system, but the results haven't been consistent.
Casey will be entering his third season, coming off a 23-win season his first year and a 34-win one last season. Despite the win-total jump, the team didn't necessarily seem to be taking the steps forward that were hoped. But the team made a big trade for Rudy Gay midseason and finished somewhat strong.
So he'll likely get a third year. But you can be sure Ujiri and Leiweke will have a close eye on him. If you want a coach on the hot seat for next season, Casey's already there.
