Best hitter of our time and is hitting 300 + at the age of 41 is a testament to his longevity. The real impressive thing is he could've been a power hitter if he wanted to and hit well over 40 HR's a year but didn't want to sacrifice his batting average.

he's not even remotely close to ranking in the top 100 in OBP, SLG, or OPS+.

He's an all-time great contact hitter for sure, but BA is only part of offensive production.

I don't buy the 'he could hit all the home runs he wants to' thing. That power hitter claim has been around from the beginning, people like to say it, but where does it come from? What has he ever done to show he could flip a switch and be an effective power hitter if he wants?

Nothing says "best hitter ever" like a guy that's tied for 1143rd all-time in wRC+ at 105 (league average is 100) with all-time greats like Josh Reddick, Jerry Hairston, Denard Span and Lyle Overbay.

you're right, all ballparks are equal

30 home runs in 1999 at Coors Field is the same as 30 home runs at Candlestick in 1967

The object of the game is to win, so when reading the stats we should punish players for using their home field to their advantage?

@navamind nothing personal just an area where we will never see eye to eye. Sabre stats have a place, but I have always disagreed with the home field part of the equation.

Making alterations to statistics is make believe in my book.

Parks are different. Eras are different. Weather changes. Day games and night games have an impact. It's part of the game and affects players numbers. Just the way it is.

Saying Ichiro could've hit X amount of homers, if he wanted to, is make believe. So is a stat that isn't based in actual on field (wherever that field happens to be)production.

Was about to type pretty much this. Something that was cool to say but wasn't supported by actual evidence (sorry batting practice doesn't count). If he had a magic power switch, it would have been cool to turn it to 25 bombs a year and still hit for a pretty high average...

Really the only somewhat negative thing that comes to my mind is that it seems like Ichiro would have been a better OBP guy. Maybe Japan is the like the Dominican Republic: you don't walk your way off the island!

Great player with many tools and a HOFer for sure.
