Why officials can't spot the ball correctly after replay ruled a runner down just short of the goal line. I just watched the Mariotta reversal. This was not as egregious as many examples but he was clearly down about 6 inches short, and they always spot it at the 1/2 yard line. Every damned time. It's the default spot, even when the ball was inches short it always goes back to 1/2 yard out.

Watching it in live action, I thought that was a TD for sure.

Down sure, about 6 inches short. But again the officials always mark that play 18" away every time or so it seems. 12" at the goal line is pretty big.
