The thing about Lehner and Kane is that, aside from Eichel, those were the Sabres two best players this year.

I agree that it's TBD if Lehner can be a long-term starter, but he was the only reason they were even close in a lot of games.
It took two first round picks, a top 4 d-man and other prospects to get those two players. They're supposed to be among the best on the team. That's why that price was paid.

Lehner has a career 0.918 SV% in 166 NHL games at age 25. He's a legit #1 goalie in the NHL. And a pretty good one.

Buffalo's problem is their depth on D. Other than that I don't see any significant holes on that roster. Bylsma should absolutely been canned. Murray, I'm not so sure.

Myers was not a legit top 4 d-man anymore in Buffalo

I like the guy. I think the potential is there for sure. But his numbers are a bit misleading because this was his first full season as a #1.

No surprise to see Bylsma go but a bit surprised that Murray got the hook. The Sabres are a team on the rise so it'll be interesting to see who they get as their new coach and GM.

The Sabres have legit one top 4 d-man right now after 3 years of Murray and he was drafted a year before Murray got there.

Even if both sides needed a change, he has yet to bring in a defenceman who has played better than Myers has since.

Not sure whether its true or not but some outlets are reporting that David Wallace is being considered for the GM role.

Bogosian has been just as good as Myers was during his last couple years in Buffalo. Which is to say a 3rd pairing guy that's being asked to play well above his level and is declining from one season to the next.

I'm not disagreeing with the general point, because their D is pretty much Ristolainen then a big pile of misfits (though McCabe took a big step forward this year). But a lot of people act as though moving Myers for Bogo was some sacrilege and a horrible deal. Myers was getting by on the strength of his rookie season.

cesspool saying Mike Gillis to Buffalo as President

Botchford says its a great fit for Gillis as he has experience dealing with a crazy owner :pound:

Apparently Pegula praised Jack Eichel in his news conference.

I don't know, Eichel is still pretty young but does appear to have what it takes.

Still, I'm going to say Reg Dunlop >Jack Eichel.

- Oh you cheap son of a bitch. Are you crazy? Those guys are retards!
- I got a good deal on those boys. The scouts said they showed a lot of promise.

Now it's a full house-cleaning in Orchard Park:

Bills Fire GM Doug Whaley One Day After NFL Draft, Ending Four-Year Tenure

I'm not saying Whaley didn't need to go but why the hell would you let him run the draft (in which he made at least one very good move, getting a haul for the 10th pick from KC) and then can him rather than do it in January?

Pegula seems like a totally rational owner who anybody would want to move to Buffalo to work for.

What they're reporting in Buffalo is that the draft represents the end of the scouting year, so they apparently didn't want to bring in a new GM with so little time before the draft.

If it weren't for canning Bylsma and Murray at the same time, I'd say it's the right move to not can Whaley when they canned Rex, but I can't figure out why you do one thing with one team and something else with the other.

Buffalo has talked to Jackets Assistant GM (and guy in charge of the Lake Erie Monsters) Bill Zito.

Bill Zito is a good man. And would be a great hire for Buffalo, with all his experience as an agent. He won't get taken as easily as a GM.

Supposedly they've talked to at least seven different candidates so far:

With Sabres 'close' to hiring, here's look at candidates - The Buffalo News

I think Botterill would be my top choice, but there's several excellent candidates on the list.
