EJ Manuel did not look good at all. At least two of the Watkins targets got batted down by the defense and easily could have been a pick-6. I didn't see the 3rd target.
And that's the reason why those of us who have been "down" on Watkins are "down". Had nothing to do with how good Watkins is, or could be . Has everything to do with his QB play, and, to a lesser extent. .Woods.
Woods has been getting a lot of attention, and I don't get it. He was with the 2nd unit. I can see him still being a key contributor to the team, but Watkins should be expected to be their primary receiver. Watkins > Woods.
Yea, well we all saw Tuel against 1st team defenses last year. . They'd better hope Manuel gets it. The guy behind him is just as badWell yea. Of course his production depends on the QB.
EJ Manuel was 2 of 7 for 19 yards with a 39.6 passer rating. He's not going to look that bad throughout an entire game for the entire year. And if he does, then he's certainly not going to last as the starting QB. He had a decent passer rating last year, and that was before he got Watkins and Williams.

wow - you guys are certainly reading a lot into the first pre-season game. ...
First game since January. . We're trying to shake the withdrawals!

If we were reading a lot into the 1st game, we might pick on the fact that Jennings had 7 carries for 23 yards, while rookie Andre Williams had 7 carries for 48 yards and 1 TD.
Woods was a 2nd-round rookie selection in 2013. Maybe he doesn't have the "natural ability" of Watkins, but sometimes "ability" is trumped by circumstances and "heart."
In 2003 the Cards drafted WR Bryant Johnson in the 1st round but he was overshadowed by the less-heralded 2nd round WR pick. Some guy named Anquan Boldin.
Exactly what about him gives you the indication that he has more "heart" than Watkins?
Seriously, what do you guys see in Woods? Are any of you actually thinking that Woods is going to outperform Watkins, or are you just playing the "maybe it will happen" game?
He's a more comfortable option. Given his year already in the system, plus the fact he isn't too bad to start with, means his QB always knows he's going to be where he's supposed to be, when he's supposed to be there. Add in that Watkins, although easily the most naturally gifted bunch of the rookie WR'S, he's not some one in a generation exception. He's a role, and role WR's rarely lead their team. And even if he does lead this team, he's still only going to be barely roster worthy in a redraft because Buffalo a a brutally awful offensive team.
